Connecting with Boys: Why Relationships Matter

Building strong connections with children is one of the most important ways we can support their wellbeing, confidence and learning. While every child is unique, research suggests that boys often connect and communicate differently from girls, and understanding these differences can help strengthen relationships at home.

Many girls are often comfortable connecting through conversation and sharing their thoughts and feelings directly. Boys, however, may be more likely to connect through shared activities and experiences. This means that some boys may open up more easily while playing a game, kicking a football, building something together, going for a walk, or helping with a task, rather than sitting down for a face-to-face conversation.

Parents and carers can support connection with boys by:

  • Spending regular one-on-one time together.
  • Showing interest in their hobbies, passions and activities.
  • Listening without immediately offering solutions or advice.
  • Creating opportunities for conversation during shared activities.
  • Encouraging emotional expression and helping boys develop language to describe their feelings.
  • Celebrating effort, persistence and kindness, not just achievements.

Strong connections provide children with a sense of security and belonging. When boys feel understood and valued, they are more likely to talk about challenges, seek support when needed, and develop positive self-esteem.

The most important thing to remember is that there is no "one-size-fits-all" approach. Every child is different, and meaningful connections are built through time, trust, and genuine interest. By finding ways to engage with our children that suit their individual personalities and interests, we can strengthen relationships and support their emotional wellbeing for years to come.
