Information and Reminders
Happy holidays!
How is it already the end of Term 2? We can hardly believe it! We are incredibly proud of the growth and progress all of our students have made during their first two terms of school. They have worked so hard and achieved so much. Our Preps have certainly earned a well-deserved holiday to rest, recharge and get ready for another fun-filled term of learning in Term 3!
iPad Installation Day – Wednesday 24th June
-To help prepare devices for classroom use, we ask that families who are planning to send an iPad to school bring it in on Wednesday 24th June so that our IT Technician can install the necessary programs.
-Please also provide the passcode used to unlock your child’s iPad. You may wish to write the code on a piece of paper, place it in a sealed envelope, and attach it to the iPad. All passcodes will be disposed of once your child’s iPad has been set up.
-If your child does not have an iPad available to bring on Wednesday but will be bringing one in Term 3, please send it along when you are ready next term.
-If your child will not be bringing an iPad to school, we have a small bank of school iPads that can be shared amongst students.
*It may be helpful to let your child know that we will not be using iPads on Wednesday—they are simply being set up.
Term 3 Planning Day
The Prep teachers will be planning for Term 3 on Thursday. As a result, students will have all of their specialist classes on Thursday rather than having them spread throughout the week. Please note that our usual specialist timetable will not be in effect this week.
**Please note: We will not be going to the library this week. Please return all library books before the holidays.
100 Days Brighter! - Friday 31st July
Curriculum
*Please remind your child to go to the toilet before they enter the classroom.
Phonics and reading
We are learning about the letters QU ('qu' as in queen)and V.
Our learning focus will include:
- Understanding the phonemes (the sound each letter makes)
- Learning the cued articulation for these sounds
- Identifying where we might see each letter in a word
- Practising the graphemes (the way we write the letter), including correct letter formation
- Reading and writing 3 and 4 letter words, using the sounds we know.
What can you do at home?
• Support your child to read the decodable book in their Reading Pocket. Try and aim to read every day, if you can.
• The 'Roll and Read' page is a great way to practise sounding out and blending words, especially for students who find reading sentences a little challenging.
•Review the letter names and sounds for QU and V, as well as the sounds we have learned so far using the cards below. You can also find these cards in your child's book pocket. When practising, say them like this: “A spells /a/.” Ask your child if they can show you the cued articulation for the sounds.
•Learn the Heart Words (in red booklet). A new page was added last week.
• Work through the optional UFLI pages.
Sound / Letter cards to review:
**There is not an X card. You make the sound by combining the /k/ and /s/ sounds
**There is not a QU card. You make the sound by combining the /k/ and /w/ sounds
Optional UFLI Home Practice Pages:
(please see the Wonga Weekly from Term 1, Week 7 with an explanation on how to use these practise pages)
Literature: reading responses and writing
Our mentor text is Molly's Jolly Brolly. Students will explore the rhyming words in the story, sequence the events, and write about the adventures they might go on with their own magical brolly. To finish the week, students will create an umbrella craft as we get into a wintery mood ahead of the holidays. ☔❄️
In Writing, students will practise the formation of the letters Q and V, as well as reviewing formation of previously learnt letters. They will sound out and write CVC words using the sounds they know, and write short, dictated sentences. Students will use their lined writing books to independently write short texts based on a picture prompt.
Now that we know most of the letters of the alphabet, students are practising writing their names with a capital letter at the beginning and lowercase letters for the rest of their name.
What can you do at home?
•Practice letter formation previously taught letters (see the picture cards above)
•Write some 3 or 4 letter words using the taught sounds (see the picture cards above!)
•Help your child practise writing their name with a capital letter at the beginning and lowercase letters for the rest of their name.
Maths
We are finishing up our unit on teen numbers to 20 (for now!). Students will compare and order collections to 20, count objects and record the matching numeral, and complete a teen number craft to consolidate their learning.
What can you do at home?
• Count and read numbers to 20. Emphasise the word 'TEEN' at the end of the word!
•Build teen numbers together by using blocks, lego, or household items to show numbers like 14 as “one group of ten and four more / four ones”.
•Practise number formation and recognition by encourage your child to read and write numbers to 20 eg. tracing them in sand, writing them in the air or using pencil and paper.
Wellbeing
SWPBS
Our SWPBS focus is Be a Learner: I am responsible for my own choices, and my friends are responsible for theirs.
Respectful Relationships
Students will play The Picnic Problem-Solving Game, where they work together to practise sharing ideas, discussing solutions and making fair decisions in group situations.
Cyber Safety
Students are up to date with their Cyber Safety lessons, so we will now spend time reinforcing safe and expected learning behaviours when using iPads during school time.
