Level 5 & 6

Celebrating a Fantastic Term of Learning
As we reach the final week of Term Two, it is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on all that students have achieved throughout the semester. From our learning about Country and Australian history, to developing new literacy and numeracy skills, students have demonstrated curiosity, perseverance and a willingness to challenge themselves. We are incredibly proud of the effort, growth and enthusiasm that students have shown across all areas of learning.
This Friday, we are looking forward to our Socceroo Supporter Day, which will also serve as a fundraiser for our Grade Six Graduation celebrations. It promises to be a fun-filled day of soccer-themed activities and school spirit while supporting an important milestone for our graduating students.
As the term comes to a close, we would like to thank families for their ongoing support throughout Semester One. We wish everyone a safe, relaxing and enjoyable holiday break and look forward to welcoming students back refreshed and ready for another exciting term of learning.
Literacy
In Literacy, students will consolidate their understanding of the Conventions of Language through a series of daily editing activities. These tasks will provide students with the opportunity to revise and apply the grammar, punctuation and language concepts explored throughout the term, including sentence structure, direct and indirect speech, plurals, appositives and apostrophes.
Students will read Kicking Goals with Goodesy and Magic, a children's biography written by Anita Heiss in collaboration with AFL legends Adam Goodes and Michael O'Loughlin. The text explores their childhoods, friendship and journey to becoming Sydney Swans champions, while highlighting themes of resilience, identity and courage.
Building on this learning, students will write a persuasive piece explaining why it was important and brave for Adam Goodes to take a stand against racism. Students will draw upon evidence from the texts they have explored and continue developing their ability to justify opinions using strong arguments and supporting evidence.
In spelling, students will continue their exploration of the Latin base word “tract” through the PhOrMes program while reinforcing their understanding of homophones.
What you can do at home:
- Discuss the qualities that make someone a positive role model.
- Encourage your child to explain their opinion and support it with evidence.
- Continue supporting regular reading and discussing important themes within texts.
- Explore words containing the base word “tract” (e.g. attract, distract, contract, extract).
Numeracy
In Numeracy, students will be consolidating and applying the mathematical concepts they have been exploring throughout the term.
Grade 5 students will complete their unit on Time, applying their understanding of timetables, schedules and 24-hour time to a range of practical problem-solving situations.
Grade 6 students will complete their unit on Patterns and Algebra before revisiting key concepts related to Area and Perimeter. Students will continue strengthening their mathematical reasoning and ability to apply measurement concepts in meaningful contexts.
What you can do at home:
- Encourage your child to read timetables and schedules when planning family activities.
- Ask your child to explain how they calculate area or perimeter around the home.
- Look for patterns in everyday life and challenge your child to explain the rule behind them.
CBL (Challenge Based Learning)
This week marks the culmination of our Challenge Based Learning unit. After weeks of inquiry, research, planning and creation, students will present their responses to the challenge:
"Inspire others to value and care for Country and its people."
On Thursday, students will showcase their projects and share their learning with others. This will be an opportunity for students to demonstrate their understanding of Country, culture and community, while celebrating the creativity, effort and thoughtfulness they have invested in their work throughout the term.
What you can do at home:
- Ask your child to explain their project and the message they hope to share.
- Encourage them to reflect on what they have learned about Country and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.
- Celebrate the effort and persistence they have shown throughout the challenge.
Wellbeing
Cyber Safety
This week, students will participate in Cyber Safety Lesson 8: What a Dilemma! Students will explore ethical decision-making in online environments and consider respectful, responsible and integrity-driven ways to respond to challenges they may encounter online. This lesson will support students in becoming thoughtful and responsible digital citizens.
