Learning & Teaching
English
As we begin a new year it is a great time to structure learning routines at home. Home reading is an important part of every learners' reading development. Creating a routine and enjoying reading together is a great way to promote the love of books and reading.
In English this year, staff will begin becoming familiar with the new Victorian Curriculum 2.0. This is an exciting time for teachers as they explore the new curriculum to explicitly plan Literacy learning experiences at our learners point of need.
St Mary’s is thrilled to be rolling out our phonological and phonemic awareness approaches to Literacy in the Foundation - Year 2 levels. Learners will be engaged in learning through explicit letter and sound lessons, practising their literacy skills through decodable and authentic texts as well as engaging in speaking and listening learning experiences.

Mathematics
Students have been learning about themselves as Mathematicians and establishing a mathematical community in their classrooms. The lesson structure and routines for Mathematics have been explicitly taught, establishing clear expectations on how to be confident and productive in Mathematics at St Mary’s.
Teachers have been getting to know their students as Mathematicians through group work and discussion on the importance of a growth mindset and that mistakes are an important part of learning.
This Year at St Mary’s we are implementing the Mathematics 2.0 of the Victorian Curriculum. This updated version of Mathematics fosters critical thinking, and aligns with modern educational needs, promoting a dynamic learning environment.
