Year 6 Literacy

Year 6 - Developing Literacy Communities

Year 6 students have started their year by developing reading and writing communities in their classes. We believe that this is an essential ingredient to creating a common language with students to help us when setting expectations, discussing future learning goals and providing them with specific, relevant and worthwhile feedback.

It has involved collaboratively unpacking the elements of our whole-school instructional models and sharing their ideas through posters and role plays, defining key vocabulary, setting up and creating a catalogue for classroom libraries, and reflecting on themselves and their preferences as authors and readers. It has been lovely getting to know the personalities of all students through these discussions while hearing about their favourite authors, genres and the topics they’d like to further explore.

Students began the Sound Waves Spelling program, which led to them developing a class definition of key terms, and practising segmenting various words and then finding the vowel sound (phoneme) in each syllable. Students have also created their own classroom displays to show their understanding of the 6+1 traits of writing, and then considered how these traits could help them to become more engaging and successful authors.

Please enjoy these photos of some of the wonderful work they’ve been doing.
