Resilience, Rights & Respectful Relationships
This week in Respectful Relationships, Grade 3/4 Mitchell focused on '10 Techniques for Controlling Anger'.
After taking turns sharing some different things that can cause us to feel angry, we worked through each of the below strategies and practised how to use them for when we are feeling overwhelmed.
- Count First - count to 10 in your head and then decide what the best thing is to do
- Balloon Breathing - take big breaths in and breathe out as if you are filling an imaginary balloon with air and then releasing it
- Time Out - find a quiet place to calm yourself down
- Five Deep Breaths - slowly breathe in and out (5 times)
- Glass of Water - take sips of water to help calm down
- Squeeze! - squeeze or hold tightly onto something and then slowly let go, releasing tension
- Hands in Pockets - this is to remind yourself not to hit anyone
- Robot to Rag Doll - scrunch up tight and hard like a robot, then slowly let go to turn yourself into a floppy rag doll
- Ice to Water - scrunch up tight and hard like an ice block, then slowly let yourself melt
- Take a Walk - go for a fast walk around the room or your yard to burn off some energy

This week, Prep Mortlock have focused on showing our School Value of Resilience and being able to ask for help. We discussed that it okay to ask for help and the importance of seeking help when it is needed. In pairs, students discussed scenarios where they may need to ask for help in the yard or in the classroom. Each pair then practised role playing their scenario before sharing it with the class. Upon reflection of this lesson the students wanted to set a goal of asking a teacher 'other than Miss Mortlock' for help. We have already had some students do this- Well done Prep Mortlock!
After walking through the office and seeing our Gugu puzzle it is clear that all students have been working hard to earn Gugu stickers this term. We are getting closer to reaching our Level 1 reward 'Pyjama Day'. Keep working hard to earn those Gugu stickers everyone. Stay tuned for more information regarding our whole school reward at the end of the term...
