In week three the Preps and Grade Ones checked in on the results of their environmentally friendly weed killer experiment from week two and found that their formula had been quite successful. The Grade Twos removed the recycled paper that they had made in week two from their deckle frames after it had dried. Their paper turned out brilliantly! In week four the Preps, Grade Ones and Grade Twos revisited the story of Clean Up by Nathan Bryon and looked at indicators of a healthy sustainable environment. They then role played being part of Rocket’s clean up crew and went out into the playground to collect data about the wildlife and rubbish levels in our environment.
Over the last two weeks the Grade Threes and Fours completed their work designing and creating biodegradable friendship bracelets out of cotton and/or wool threads. The students wove their bracelets using a cardboard loom that they made themselves. There was emphasis on minimising waste and creating a product that had minimal impact on the environment.
In weeks three and four the Grade Five students set about adding some sustainable decorations to the STEAM room to celebrate this term’s theme of Sustainability. They collected materials including cardboard, bottle caps, old buttons, plastic packaging and scrap paper to repurpose into models of one of nature's best cleaners…bugs. The students used the Design Process to imagine their bugs and then set about constructing them. The results were pretty impressive.
