National Science Week
We celebrated National Science Week during Week Five at the College. This year’s theme, Species Survival – More than just sustainability, explores some of the critical challenges impacting Earth’s human, animal and plant habitation, especially here in Australia.
Students also took place in the Education Perfect Science Championship and achieved the following:
- 7,910 points earned!
- 11th place in WA!
- 72nd place across Australia! 🇦🇺
- 105th place globally! 🌏
Students were able to get involved by competing in a Species Survival Escape room in their science classes or completing a poster based on the theme at home.
The prize for the most visually appealing poster was awarded to Naomi Nguyen in Year Seven (T3) and the runner-up was Poleen Infantee in Year Ten (T6). The winning poster by Naomi featured a beautifully drawn mountain pygmy possum. The prize for the most informative poster was awarded to Charli Green in Year Seven and the runner-up was Chloe Walker in year Eleven (P7).
If you want more science, DIY Science put up daily science projects during National Science Week to try at home:
- Saturday 10 August: Acidic Oceans (Chemistry, climate change)
- Sunday 11 August: Secret Sounds (Physics, sound waves, anatomy)
- Monday 12 August: Mini Greenhouse (Biology, agriculture)
- Tuesday 13 August: Suspended Bubbles (Chemistry, buoyancy, states of matter)
- Wednesday 14 August: Marshmallow Launcher (Physics, mechanics, design thinking)
- Thursday 15 August: Make a Magnet (Physics, magnets, electronics)
- Friday 16 August: Rainbow Lightning (Physics, fluids, art)
- Saturday 17 August: Water Density (Earth science, temperature, fluids, density)
- Sunday 18 August: Storm in a Jar (Earth and space science, physics)
Thanks to all staff in the Science learning area. Their enthusiastic approach to science education is helping to develop curious minds and creative thinkers of the future.
