Book Week’s theme of ‘Reading is Magic’ was embodied by the students here at South Melbourne Park! There were numerous Harry Potters and other magical creatures, cats, robots, dogs and a few Wally’s.
Book Week is always a magical time and is only possible with some extra effort. We would like to say a big thank you to Johanne Abbott, who organized the whole event, Leanne Kelly for being our excellent MC and assembly support by Liz McIntosh & Kara Merrin. Senior Toni and Joize spoiled us with some arepas and of course a final big thank you to the parents, for helping to bring the magic to book week by ensuring the students looked so amazing in all their costumes.
Here is what some of the students had to say about book week:
Austin, 2A – “Everyone was wearing different interesting costumes for the Book Parade. I dressed up as Harry Potter because I like it and I am reading it.”
Lola, 3A – “I dressed up as Annie from Runt. All the Grade 3s read Runt. It was a really nice book, and I liked it so much I re-read it with my mum! I recommend Runt for Grade 2s and up.”
Annabelle, 4C – “I really loved seeing everyone dress up and show their favourite characters from different books. I dressed up as Athena, from the Percy Jackson books, because I really enjoyed reading the books and Athena was a smart character – she was the Goddess of Strategy.”
Archer, 1B – “Book Week was fun and we did lots of fun activities. We made wands and wizards! We wrote about our book week character. I dressed up as Bright Bill from The Wild Robot.”
Henry, Prep B – “I got to dress up as Harry Potter and we got to have a parade. The parade was fun. My friends were dressed up. Alex was dressed up as Pikachu.”
Venice, 5A – “I found it really fun that we got a lot of activities leading up to Book Week. I think it is a great opportunity to read books and complete activities. We got to make book marks and create book covers for our favourite books. We even got to eat arepas with Senior Toni.”
Jennifer, 6A – “I dressed up as the Warden from the Book Holes. Holes is a very suspenseful book and I think Grade 5 up should read this book, because there is some violence in the middle. I chose the Warden because my parents said we share similar characteristics, like we are both a tiny bit bossy and sometimes I can be a bit crazy.”
