Dear Families,
The Assumption of Mary Mass
Yesterday, the Year 5 and 6 students joined the parish to celebrate the Assumption of Mary Mass. This special day, known as the Feast of the Assumption, is observed on August 15th each year and is an important occasion for Catholics. It commemorates the belief that Mary, the mother of Jesus, was taken up to heaven, both body and soul.
Mary is often called the ‘Ark of the Covenant.’ In the Old Testament, the Ark was a sacred container that held God's Law and the Manna, which was food from heaven. It symbolized God's promise of salvation. Mary is called the new ‘Ark’ because she carried Jesus, who brought the new promise of salvation.
Father Jithin's homily was very insightful and included a fascinating science lesson. Recent scientific discoveries show how a mother’s body helps recover after childbirth by using cells left behind by the baby. This helps the mother heal and rejuvenate after giving life. This biological process is amazing and adds to our understanding of the miracle of life.
Father Jithin connected this scientific insight to the Catholic belief about Mary’s Assumption. Since Mary carried Jesus and would have had cells from Him left in her, this helps us appreciate how she was taken to heaven in a special way. According to this view, Mary’s body was renewed by the cells from Jesus, and when she was assumed into heaven, she was united with Jesus in a new and profound way.
