Learning and fun

When my daughter was quite young she had to stay home from school one day as she was sick.  There were floods of tears when she realised she wasn't going to school.  When she finally recovered enough to use her words (!) she was able to tell me that she was very sad about missing school because she would "miss out on learning and fun".  This is exactly the way I hope all of our students feel about GSG; that it's a place of learning and fun. And, I've certainly seen that in abundance this term.

As you are aware we have had Radio Active, The Big Sleep Out, Technologies Showcase and the Rhythms Whole School Arts Exhibition is coming up; and the list goes on.  One of the things that I like best about all these events is that they provide authentic ways for students to demonstrate their learning.  The Big Sleep Out is a community collaboration with the Albany Community Foundation and is linked directly to students' achievement of competence in units for Certificate IV Business and making a contribution to the lives of people experiencing homelessness.  The Arts Exhibition showcases the artwork and learning of students across the whole school.  The Technologies Showcase saw me having conversations with students who have developed software to support online food orders and are motivated to extend their learning in new programming languages alongside students showing me their creation of flat pack furniture and the delicious produce from the Sustainable Production course and culinary magic of the Hospitality students.   We had impassioned conversations about sustainability, food miles, carbon footprints, and new technology along the way.

When you are chatting with your children, I hope you'll be able to hear about some amazing things about the learning we are doing and the fun we are having.

Update on Ulster Road Lane Closure - Stage 4

The authorised contractor, DM Civil, is progressing well in their work to replace a wastewater pipeline under Ulster Road. This pipeline is an important part of Albany's wastewater network and the work will reduce future leaks and breaks.

They have been able to combine Stage 2 and 3 to avoid a full road closure. From Wednesday 28 August 2024 we will switch to Stage 4, which involves a change in direction of the existing lane closure. Work for this stage should take approximately one month.

What to expect in Stage 4:

  • A single northbound lane will be closed from Bardley Road to Hardie Road.
  • The southbound lane from Lower King / Bayonet Head to North Road will remain open, however will have reduced speed limits.
  • A detour along Angove Road and Collingwood Road will be in place to reduce traffic around the schools and hospital.
  • Signage will be in place to show access to the Hospital and Health Campus.
  • Access to properties and businesses will be maintained.
  • For the safety of our workers and the community, please follow all traffic signs and reduced speed limits.

Thank you for your patience while we complete this essential pipeline replacement. With your continued support, we can shape WA's water future together.
