Scotch Interschool Friendly Moot

On Monday the 4th of September, Antigone Thornton and Lili Acquisto, two Year 11 Legal Studies students, participated in the Scotch Interschool Friendly Moot. Mooting is a simulated court proceeding where teams are presented with a legal problem that they argue before a judge.

The day began with a presentation from barrister, Gisela Nip, who shared her journey from school to becoming a barrister. Gisela offered students advice for the moot and encouraged them to have the cou

rage to try new things.

In preparation for the day, Antigone and Lili developed their legal argument for a negligence case, being heard on appeal. They researched the law and prepared their case. Teams then participated in a mock court proceeding in which they presented their case before a judge. Students were also required to think on their feet as they answered questions from the judge and responded to the opposing team’s arguments.

Lili and Antigone then had the opportunity to participate in a Moot Workshop run by a panel of moot judges, including MGC alum, and 2017 School Captain, Courtney McKenzie. Courtney is a final year Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of Arts student at Deakin University and spoke fondly of her time at MGC. Courtney also gave some words of encouragement to Antigone and Lili for their VCE journey, and for life beyond school.

The day provided students with the opportunity to be introduced to the courtroom environment and gave them an insight into the workings of the Australian legal system. A big thank you to Scotch College for hosting the event, and to Miss Habashi for helping students prepare for the moot, and for her encouragement on the day. This was MGC’s first time participating in the Scotch Interschool Friendly Moot, and we hope it’s the first of many for years to come.
