Year 7 Performance - Fractured Fairytales

Congratulations to the Year 7 Performance students who have recently completed their Fractured Fairytales unit of work. Putting original spins, with some gruesome twists and controversial turns in the traditional tales, this semester’s Year 7 students have yet again come up with some engaging and entertaining pieces. We look forward to seeing what these creative students come up with next term when they embark on their whole class performances. This semester the topic that will be explored is “Mystical Creatures”. The Loch Ness Monster, Big Foot, Unicorns, Dragons, and Mermaids are just some of the magical creatures we will be meeting next term, so stay tuned!

Year 10 Drama

Congratulations to the wonderful Year 10 Drama class who have just completed their first learning task. Based around the children's picture book by John Marsden and Shaun Tan - "The Rabbits", the year 10 students crafted performance pieces utilising the conventions of theatre they have been studying this term. Please enjoy a couple of snippets of their clever and sensitive performance work in the brief clip posted below.

Sydney Dance Company

WORKSHOP

On Friday the 25th of August, two performing artists from Sydney Dance Company came to MGC to do a workshop with the year 9, 10 and VCE dance students. Brad and Siobhan came to teach us what Sydney Dance Company was about as well as taking us through some contemporary technique phrases and exercises that they do in the company. They then taught us a small section of repertoire from one of the dances that was being performed in Melbourne, ‘Forever & Ever’. It was a great experience for the MGC dancers to learn from them and to get a better insight what their company is about, as well as learning different styles of dance from different people.

ARTS CENTRE EXCURSION

The following week on Wednesday the 30th, we went to the Arts Centre in the city to watch the triple bill performance from Sydney Dance Company. The performance included three different dance works; ‘I Am-ness’ choreographed by Rafael Bonachela, which used beautiful movement and was performed by 4 dancers. ‘The Shell, A Ghost, The Host & The Lyerbird’ choreographed by Marina Mascarell which explored the human relationship with technology and connection with Nature. In this work the dancers used a lot of large sculptures and materials attached to the ceiling. Finally, ‘Forever & Ever’ choreographed by Antony Hamilton was the third work that we watched. It explored ideas of order, chaos, popular culture and human behaviour. Here is a link if you would like to watch the preview for ‘Forever & Ever’:  https://youtu.be/kqOQll-C6jQAll three works were a completely different style of contemporary dance which was great for us to see. After the workshop on Friday with Brad and Siobhan, we were able to understand and connect with these works and it was cool to see some of the movement we learnt in the workshop being performed on stage. After the performance there was a Q&A with 3 dancers and the rehearsal director. It was great to learn a bit about each dancer and their experience working and performing with the company.

Grease on the Red Carpet

It was with much excitement that those involved in our 2023 school musical 'Grease' gathered to watch the film. To celebrate the wonderful work of our 2023 cast we hosted a Red Carpet event, where the central cast members dressed up and were invited onto the stage to take one last bow. Seeing our TBirds in their formal dresses was weird and wonderful and a great close to the 2023 school musical. We particularly wish the many year 12s involved in Grease all the best as they look towards their final exams and thank them again for their energy and commitment in this busy year for them.
