Celebrating a Term of Excellence, Teamwork and Diversity

Principal's Report

As Term Three begins to wind down, I am reminded of the rhythm of our days, humming with activity, accomplishments, and shared experiences. Melbourne Girl’s College has always been a hub of vibrant energy, and this term has truly amplified this spirit.

Every term, we aim to build opportunities and experiences that are unique, and filled with challenges, accomplishments and heart-warming moments, and this term has been no exception. Once again, our young people have raised the bar. Whether it was in academic endeavours, sporting events, inclusivity and social awareness initiatives, or the performing arts, they have showcased not just their maturity and talent, but also their dedication, creativity and drive.

This term has been bursting with events:

The Australian Mathematics Challenge saw our students tackle complex problems with enthusiasm and tenacity. The footlights blazed and our new theatre came alive with the “Grease” school production, which showcased the immense talent of our students. Science Week and Health and PE Week brought explorative experiments, physical challenges, and rich learning opportunities. Book Week celebrated literary wonders with our community, delving deep into the world of stories and characters. We proudly embraced Wear It Purple Day, emphasising the importance of inclusivity and acceptance. Our budding STEAM Team showcased their skills in the Lego League Competition, integrating creativity with technical acumen. Our Chinese Cultural Days enriched our understanding of traditions, arts and the beauty of the Chinese heritage and amidst the global soccer fever, we too got swept up in the excitement, cheering for the Matildas with such pride and enthusiasm.

Our NAPLAN results which were released this term were truly an incredible highlight for our Year 7 and Year 9 levels. Our students achieved well above state averages in all measures. These outstanding results are emblematic of the collective commitment of our academic excellence, but more importantly the learning growth of our students. With the clear link between robust NAPLAN performances and promising VCE outcomes, we are excited for what the future holds for our students.

We offered for the first time this term, the Youth Mental Health First Aid Parent Course. This marked an important step in our commitment to mental wellbeing. By equipping our parents and carers with crucial tools, language, and insights, we are strengthening the very foundations of our community. The feedback we have received underscores the significance of this initiative. We will continue to invest in offering this course to our parents and carers in 2024 and highly encourage families to consider undertaking the course.

I cannot stress enough the value of collaboration between parents, carers, and teachers in the growth of our students. Next week, we have our second Parent, Student, Teacher Interviews for the year and I urge all families to engage and participate in the interviews. It is a golden opportunity to discuss your child’s progress, celebrate their achievements and collaboratively strategise for their future growth. Your involvement truly makes a difference.

As we head into the holidays, please take the time to relax, rejuvenate and return with renewed energy for the final stretch of the year. Term Four promises to be equally exciting and rewarding. To our Year 12 students, it is essential to strike a balance between focused preparation and regeneration. Remember that a rested mind is more efficient than a fatigued one. Ensure you get enough sleep, maintain a balanced diet, and engage in regular physical activity. While preparation for your final exams is paramount, remember to take moments to simply enjoy where you are now. Whether it is the last rays of sunshine in the afternoon or the calmness of the morning, find pockets of joy in your day.

I wish every member of the MGC community a restful break and we look forward to making next term even more exceptional.
