PLT Spotlight

Year 3 and Year 4

Year 4

Dear Families,

Our Year 4’s are so happy to be sharing their learning with you.  We have participated in many engaging and exciting experiences as we learnt new content in all curriculum areas.

In Reading, we have been focusing on identifying, describing, and understanding adverbs and how these words add detail to verbs in sentences.  We have been exploring different types of adverbs such as:

  • Adverbs of frequency (such as: frequently, sometimes, constantly)
  • Adverbs of time (today, yesterday, soon, later)
  • Adverbs of manner (angrily, happily, loudly, unknowingly)
  • Adverbs of degree (very, really, extremely, deeply)
  • Adverbs of place (outside, here, south, under, on)

In writing, we have started our new genre of ‘explanation’ writing.  We have spent time unpacking the language features and text structure to make our explanation writing more engaging for readers.  We have spent time drafting plans and researching a topic of interest, to base our writing on.  We have also focused on our handwriting and have been using the laptops to complete frenzy writes in preparation for NAPLAN next year.

In Maths, we have been exploring fractions and equivalent fractions through games, fraction walls and lots of manipulatives.  We are moving into using number lines to support this learning.  We have also explored time through using am and pm notations and identify elapsed time that passes from the start of an event to its finish.  Currently, we are strengthening our Maths disposition during problem-solving sessions.  This is where we are focusing on being curious, persistent, willing to try difficult questions, etc.

In Inquiry lessons, we have had fun exploring what makes us unique and an individual and why it is important to celebrate our differences.  We researched gender stereotypes and how these should not stop us from participating in activities or things we love to do.  We have also been investigating how emotional responses can vary in situations and strategies we can use to manage our emotions in different situations.  We explored ways to be safe in the playground/ classroom and designed our own safe playground spaces.

We are incredibly proud of all the progress we have made so far in Year 4 and are excited to continue our learning for the rest of the year.
