World War One Presentation

Students recently attended a presentation on the experiences of Australian troops who fought on the Western Front in WWI. Presenter Shane Blackman shared military artefacts and told stories of the devastating impacts of modern warfare. Students asked intelligent questions about strategies, weaponry and survival on the battlefield.

Mr Blackman commented on students' excellent participation and behaviour.

Year 12 Work Studies

Year 12 Work Studies have been learning about the art of floral design.

Students had a lovely time creating Spring bouquets for gift giving.

Year 8 historians created some excellent models for the Medieval History Exhibit, revealing their skilful research and creativity. You can see examples of their work in the school library.

Science

This term in Science Year 7 are looking at ecosystems, food webs and energy flow. This allows us the great opportunity to head outside and learn from our natural surroundings, and allows students on the Year 7 camp a chance to see different ecosystems and environments.

The Year 8's are focusing on 'Building a better Earth', where we look at human impacts on ecosystems, the structure of the Earth and classification of animals and plants.

Year 9 are focusing on the human body with emphasis on the nervous, endocrine and musculoskeletal system to see what makes us work.

Year 10 are finishing up their studies for their junior years at high school and toward the end of the term will engage in some Year 11 preparation work for Biology, Chemistry and Physics to give them the best start to their senior studies next year.

All junior year groups are undertaking end of year exams, with resources and time for revision provided (we have covered a lot this year!).

Year 10 and 11 students in Investigating Science were lucky enough to have a tour of the Costa Tomato Farm in Guyra. We learnt about genetic engineering, AI use in production, quality and pest control, economics and transportation - a truly eye opening experience!

The students will need this information during the Year 12 course to investigate how Science and industry interact, invaluble information for the 2024 HSC!

In November, the 5 members of the ASC band Glitch will be travelling to Sydney to be part of the Surround Sound project. Surround Sound is a band competition for Rural and Remote public school students. Upon being accepted as a finalist from their video submission, the band members have been working hard to compile a repertoire of songs ready to perform at Spec Fest, which occurs as a fringe event to Schools Spectacular. They have received assistance in their preparation from experienced Music Industry professionals such as Pete Skelton and Imogen Clarke. They will have the opportunity to further workshop their songs in Sydney and get to entertain audiences at least twice on the Spec Festival stages.

Band Members from L to R:

Josie O’Baoill, Eve McDonald, Alma Kanety, Charlotte Rubie, (Nyla Chemane away).

Teachers: Kees Grenyer and Beth Richards with Musicians and Workshop facilitators Pete Skelton and Imogen Clark.

Uralla council approached the CAPA department a few months ago asking if any of our art and/or design students would like to participate in a design competition that aimed to visually improve ‘The Glen’ in Uralla. This competition involved designing metal sculpture works inspired by the southern hemisphere constellations. Participants were required to visually represent one of the southern constellations using its associated animal.

Several students at ASC showed interest and had a go at designing a sculpture that reflected a southern constellation of their choice, and excitingly Rida from Year 9 was a successful applicant and will be coming along side other local artists whose designs were also selected. Her Pavo constellation design depicting a peacock was selected to be one of 8 sculptures in the garden.

As a result, Rida received a formal letter of congratulations from the Uralla council, a money prize that she can use as she so desires, as well as her design being made into a permanent metal sculpture that she and others can appreciate for decades to come when visiting ‘The Glen’.

We are very excited to see the final product erected at ‘The Glen’ sometime next year, and we congratulate Rida on her efforts and success.
