Year 10 Geography

MT CANOBOLAS/GAANHA BULA AND WINDERMERE FARM

The Geography students travelled to Mt Canobolas/Gaanha Bula to investigate the social, economic and environmental impacts of the mountain bike park in the Glenwood State forest. Students were fortunate to have Jack Rahilly from AdvancedCAD as the guest speaker. Jack discussed the design features and construction of the “Galinbundinya track” and the “Trail of Awesomeness”. Students then travelled to Windermere Farm and identified the social benefits of mountain bike riding with a ride of the school track and a sausage sizzle. A great day was had by all.

Learning Enhancement Team

Every week, the LE Team put their heads together and vote on a Student of the Week. The student is chosen based on observations made by the LE Team, within the week.

Last week, the title went to Jackson Raffen (Year 10) for his hard work in across all subjects and for his regular attendance at Study Hub!

This week, the title goes to Lachlan Munro (Year 7) for the improvement in his approach to his studies by using tutoring offered during prep time and for using Study Hub to give his the best chance to succeed!

Keep it up the amazing work boys!

A BIG thanks

On behalf of the whole LE Team, we’d like to say a big thank you to the adult volunteers and the Year 10 students for their willingness to help with provisions during the HSC Trials and the Year 11 Preliminary Exams. It’s an enormous undertaking and the support provided to our students with provisions was wonderful.

Kinross Wolaroi debating has been successful in winning many of their debates in Term Three. It has been a busy term with teams participating in both local and national competitions.

Early in Term 3 teams competed in the Mayor's Cup, a local debating competition run by Orange City Council. The debating team, George Hogg, Sala Orme-Smith, Anabelle Van Wyke and Sienna Whalan demonstrated excellent oratory skills, winning debates against other local schools to qualify for the Finals. The team was narrowly defeated by Orange High School and finished the competition as the runner up. Anabelle Van Wyke was awarded the best debater of the entire competition, demonstrating her talents in this area.

More recently the school entered two schools in the Dudley Cup Competition which is run by Orange Rotary Club. After competing against other local schools, The Kinross Wolaroi Year 10 team, Sala Orme-Smith, Anabelle Van Wyke, Bonnie McPhee, Lucy McIsaac and Lulu Clinton won all debates and will now progress to the finals which are to be held later this year at Duntryleague Golf Club.

Kinross Wolaroi’s participation in the HICES independent schools debating competition saw the Year 7 / 8 team progress to the Preliminary Finals where they were sadly defeated by a team from Sydney.

The Year 10 Kinross Wolaroi 2 Team of Bonnie McPhee, Lulu Clinton, Lucy McIsaac and Isabel Wong successfully qualified to the Semifinals round, and finished in third place in their division across the state. This team has only lost one debate this year.

The school has also entered in the Australian, National Virtual Debating Competition against schools around Australia. We began the competition with six teams participating, four of which have progressed to the Knockout rounds after recording a number of wins.

On Tuesday 12 September the Year 7’s, Poppy Warren, Anna Orr, Julia Barnett and Maisie Cooper, won their knockout ANVDC debate and will continue in the competition, next term. We eagerly await the results of the other three teams who will complete their round over the next fortnight.

Gathos

Please could we post some images from the Last Kinross Wolaroi Gatho for our 2022 Prefects. The Gathos are a Prefect initiative and celebrate student voice in a Prefect run assembly every fortnight. The video shows the winner of this fortnight’s Kinrossian, Freya Berry, being celebrated for her kindness and consideration of others through a war cry. These assemblies are a significant and much loved event and I think it appropriate that we acknowledge the Prefects who made them possible.
