JP Racing 2024
HPV Racing - Calder Raceway
On the frosty morning of Saturday, the 4 of May, all HPV year six students, teachers and parents drove up to Calder Raceway to compete in the very first JP Racing event of the year.
All students were to arrive at 7.30 in the morning. We walked the racing track to get used to all the turns, hills and know when to change gears. The first riders from each team began to get ready for their ride in the race starting at 9.00. The vehicles are Shazzam for the shortest riders, Raptor & Phoenix for the average height riders and Vanquish for the tallest riders. Each student had a 40 minute stint of riding in their allocated vehicle, and had to time a teammate for their 40 minute stint. If you weren’t timing or riding, it was a good experience of cheering your teammates on and encouraging them to keep pushing through.
Riding the vehicle was lots of fun, because you felt free of all your worries. I personally enjoyed the home straights, because you could push yourself to peddle faster and hear all your friends cheering you on. Some challenges were the big uphill, where if you didn’t make it up, you had to get pushed up by the marshals. Another challenge was avoiding other HPVs either going ten times faster than you or ten times slower than you.
Snacks and lollies were given out throughout the day as well as lunch. I think everyone was filled with a mixture of adrenaline, nerves, excitement and candy!
By the end of the 7 hour race (at 4.00pm), we had the results.
In the Junior category: Raptor finished 2nd with 92 laps completed , Vanquish finished 3rd completing 89 laps, Pheonix finished 5th completing 85 laps , and Shazzam finished 9th completing 72 laps.
It was such a good experience for all the students who participated, and all students came home ten times fitter. But of course, we couldn’t have made this happen without all the parents who came to help, as well as Mr Veitch, Mr Jenkins, Mr Zac and Miss Bower. It was an experience that definitely made all of us look forward to the next race.
