YEAR 10-12 NEWS
Term 2
Congratulations to all Senior school students for making a terrific start back in Term 2. It has been a busy start, with lots of programs, excursions, VET courses, assessments, and sports all taking place within the first few weeks!
Term 2 is a busy time for our senior students with SACs occurring across all subjects and the GAT taking place in week 10 for all students completing a Unit 3&4 subject and VM students.
Semester exams will occur in Week 9 from Tuesday – Friday (with Monday being a public holiday).
With a range of activities and opportunities occurring for students, it is essential that attendance each day is a priority. Any absences should be communicated to the College and appropriate Year Level Coordinator.
Congradulations to Year 12 students Josh and Jack Unthank who represented Victoria last week at the Australian Athletics Championships in Adelaide last week.
They competed in the U18 1500m final with Josh finishing in 5th place (right) and Jack in 14th place (left).
They both also competed in the preliminary final for the 800m
Year 11 and 12 Art Making and Exhibiting excursion at the end of term 1.
We visited NGV to see 2 exhibitions: Tops Arts and Triennial to find inspiration and learnt about the characteristics of exhibitions.
The year 11 students have made a great start back for term 2 and have settled well into the VCE routine and expectations. This is a long and busy term for these students, with SACS, excursions, sports days, exams, and incursions in the calendar. A friendly reminder to students and families to be checking the SAC calendar regularly via compass to help stay organised and prepared. Additionally, as we head into these colder months it is so important to be taking care of your health and wellbeing. Prioritise sleep, eating well and spending quality time with loved ones. I am always available to support in any way, so don’t be afraid to reach out
Welcome back to term 2, hopefully everyone had a fun break, with batteries fully charged for a big term. Students will sit the GAT (for ALL students who are doing unit 3 and 4 subjects) and mid-year exams to finish off unit 3.
I must also highlight the work of Lily Fowler and Claire Sullivan for the decoration of our learning space. Lily has created a bit of a WHC tradition of having our 12’s do their handprints for the walls. The students really enjoy the idea of having a part of them here for future years.
Herne Hill Athletics Day
Last term, the Year 12 VCE-VM students spent the day assisting with Herne Hill Primary School’s Athletics Carnival. Students were separated into groups, assisting the Herne Hill teaching staff to run each field and track event.
Students showed their leadership qualities by encouraging the primary students to try their best, showing initiative, communicating in their teams, and solving problems when they arose. Congratulations to all students involved.
Open Night
Year 12 VCE-VM and VPC students organised a BBQ fundraiser for the Western Heights College open night. Students were faced with many challenges such as how to conduct a BBQ on a total fire ban, however found ways to overcome each issue. Students identified the tasks that would need completing both on and before the evening and delegated each task amongst themselves. On the night, the students cooked over 250 sausages, 4kgs onions and sold over 180 drinks. All of the money raised will go towards the opening of the ‘West Café’ later this term.
