Aerobics

Well done to our aerobics teams who competed in the FISAF Super Series at Golden Grove on Saturday.

This was the first competition for many of our students and understandably there were some nerves backstage! It was great to see our teams encouraging each other and many thanks to the coaches and to Tennille Cobb for supporting the teams backstage. Everyone took away some valuable experience and received some crucial feedback from the judges for the upcoming State Championships on Saturday June 22.

Swimming

Congratulations to Lucy Mackay who has been selected to represent South Australia at the National Swimming Championship on the Gold Coast in July.

Lucy has already had a golden summer, winning every swimming trophy Loreto has on offer and helping Mulhall to a swimming carnival victory. She then lit up the East Adelaide SAPSASA swim trials before spear-heading the East Adelaide team to a win in the State Championships at Marion.

At the Nationals Lucy will compete in the Freestyle (50m and 100m), Butterfly (50m and 100m) and 4 x 50m Individual Medley. She will also swim the Butterfly leg in the 4 x 50m Medley Relay and be part of the 4 x 50m Freestyle team.

Good luck, Lucy!

Soccer

Soccer began with a bang on Friday night with our teams and parents enjoying the autumn sunshine.

Our Year 6 Gold team had to fight hard for a 3-1 win at Pembroke. Sadly, our Year 5 Blue team didn’t get to take the field after our opposition forfeited.

It rained goals at Scotch College with our Year 4 Gold team storming their way to a 14-0 victory (the girls kept careful count). Summer Squire scored a hattrick on her Loreto debut while Imogen Fluder helped herself to 5 goals of her own. That’s a good season for some!

An extremely excited Year 3 Blue team travelled to St Peters Girls and started their campaign with an 8-0 win. Later this term our Year 3 Blues take on our Year 4 Golds on a Friday afternoon at Loreto. Will the Year 3s be intimidated playing against the older, bigger Year 4s? “Bring it,” one of the plucky youngsters declared after training this week!

Netball

Six of our nine winter netball teams started their seasons on Saturday.

The Year 6 Blue team have been entered in the Sub Junior 1 division this winter. We lost 9-20 in our first game against East Marden but are looking forward to the challenge of this division. The Year 6 Gold and Year 6 White teams had strong wins to open their accounts in Sub Junior 3 and Sub Junior 6 respectively.

The Year 5 Blues had a 22-5 win over St Ignatius in Sub Junior 5. The Year 5 Gold team battled hard against Burnside but went down 3-12 in Sub Junior 7.

Our Year 3/4 team are in a very strong Primary 2 division but fought well, going down 6-9 in a close encounter.

Our Year 4, Year 3 Blue and Year 3 Gold teams start this Saturday after byes last week.

AFLW

Our Year 5 and Year 6 teams took the field on Tuesday in Round 1 of the IGSSA competition.

Our Year 5 Golds came up against a much bigger Scotch opposition but didn’t take a backward step, running out winners 7.8 to 3.3. Charlotte Holland and Isabelle Alp attacked the ball with real ferocity. Competing against older sisters clearly helped prepare them for the Scotch talls. Sophie d’Amato showed a touch of class, Sibella Frearson-Lea won plenty of the ball while Maria Zappia and Zali Karp were solid in defence.

On a neighbouring field the Year 6 Blue team had a big win over St Ignatius, 11.4 to 3.2. Domenica Papalia and Ella Harrison ran the show in the midfield, Sophie Adamson was creative across half forward while closer to goal it was Milla Time. In a dominant display, Milla Smith popped through 6 goals to lead the Coleman after Round 1.

The Year 3/4 team will begin their season next Tuesday.

Oh yeah… the players will be pleased to hear that our new guernseys have arrived!

Basketball

The Loreto Swish started their campaign with a strong 31-6 win over St Anthony’s at Wayville on Wednesday night. Coach Caitlin was delighted with the team work on show. All five players hit the scoreboard with Amelia Lucas (14) and Quinn Kidd (8) leading the way.

Student Achievements

Well done to Madeline Leckie in Year 2 who competed in the Follow Your Dreams regional dance competition during the school holidays. Madeline placed for each of her solos – 1st for Song and Tap, 2nd for Jazz and 3rd for Classical Ballet. Her solo scores were high enough to qualify for a place in the Follow Your Dreams national championship in January 2025. The national event will be held at the Adelaide Convention Centre. Congratulations Madeline!

Well done also to Minny Chinnahong who received the Team Spirit Award for her Newton Jaguars Sub Junior 4 netball team over summer. She also found out that she has been moved up to the Sub Junior 3 team for winter. Great work, Minny!

Over the school holidays, Grace Marin competed in both the Athletics Australia National Championships (heptathlon, hurdles and 3,000m walk) she also competed in the Australian Little Athletics Nationals in the 1,500m walk and hurdles. Grace achieved a silver medal for her walk. Congratulations Grace!

Lucy Mackay (Year 6) and Kate Li (Year 5) were part of the East Adelaide SAPSASA Swim Team that competed against all the other SAPSASA zones in Adelaide.

Kate and Lucy both competed in the 4 x 100m freestyle relay with East Adelaide finishing in 2nd place. Lucy continued an outstanding term by taking out 1st place in the Div 1 50m Butterfly and also 2nd place in the Div 1 50m Freestyle.

The East Adelaide team had an excellent meet, finishing as the State Champions!

Well done to Lucy and Kate on your championship win and on representing the school so well!

Performing Arts

Generations in Jazz

A fantastic three days event in Mount Gambier was enjoyed by 47 students and 5 staff at the annual Generations in Jazz Festival. With nearly double the number of students attending compared to last year, we knew we would be in for a busy and exciting weekend of music competition. This year, Loreto entered five vocal ensembles and, for the first time, a stage band.

The Generations in Jazz Festival has been running for three decades and this year, was attended by over 6,000 people from all over Australia. It is a national competition of Jazz music in the form of Stage Bands, Small Combos, Large Vocal Ensembles and Small Vocal Ensembles. It draws on industry professionals to present and work with the students over the weekend, and it all culminates in a finale awards concert where we all get to find out how the students fared in their respective competitions.

Congratulations go to the girls in Senior Vocal Ensemble 1, who achieved third place in the highest division – Div 1 Large Vocal Ensemble. And also, to the Senior Vocal Quintet 2 who placed third in the Div 2 Small Vocal Ensemble category. A special mention goes to Iris Hamilton who was awarded a place in the honorary Division 4 ‘Superband’ for Tenor Saxophone. Iris was identified as the best Tenor Saxophone player on the day in Division 4. This was particularly connected to her beautiful Clarinet solo in the choice Ballad performed by the band.

Thanks must go to the staff who coordinated, supported and directed the ensembles across the three-day trip - Stacey Theel (Vocal Director), Elicia Baldwin (Music Teacher / Vocal Director), Tom Hamnet (Music Teacher), Emma Searle (Assistant Principal) and Tim de Jong (Director of Performing Arts).
