English
Reading and Viewing
Students will be exploring texts related to the Olympics, as well as texts linking into our theme of ‘Morality and Justice’. Through reading a variety of genres across the term, students will deepen their understanding of these topics from completing individual reading, small group reading and comprehension exercises. Guided reading sessions will see students explore a novel and will revise techniques of comprehension to further expand their knowledge of the text.
Writing
The focal point in writing will be persuasive texts. The students will be learning the structure and specific techniques relating to writing effective persuasive texts. They will be involved in developing writing tools such as plans, checklists and rubrics to further enhance their understanding of the task. On completion of their major persuasive text, students will be able to see growth in their writing skills and present a final draft that can be read by others.
Speaking and Listening
We will continue to support students in developing their capacity to speak confidently and with expression about an increasing range of topics. They will utilise these skills during prayer and liturgy, leadership, and projects. These presentations will be a component of Inquiry units.
Maths
This term students will continue to develop their understanding of the four operations and algebraic patterns. Students will expand their problem solving skills though worded and multi step problems. We will revise and extend our understanding of fractions and decimals and percentages, exploring the relationship between these and whole numbers.
We will undertake a project unit on financial maths where the students will utilise skills using the four operations. Students will further develop their understanding of fractions, decimals and percentages linking them with real life problem solving strategies.
The unit on Shapes, Lines and Angles will first focus on identifying and understanding the geometric language of lines and angles that are essential when describing the properties of shapes then connect 3-dimensional objects with their nets and other two-dimensional representations. We will also construct simple prisms and pyramids.
In learning about Statistics and Probability, students will focus on chance by learning about probability and chance outcomes. We will use tallies to record and collect data and learn how to use this data to create graphs, especially with the Olympics. They will interpret a range of data displays, including a variety of variables.
Inquiry/Religion
In our Religion class, we will delve into Pope Francis's message on dignity and well-being as presented in “Fratelli Tutti”. Students will engage in understanding the Church's perspective on the rights of all individuals. Through a combination of prayer, reflection, and discussion, they will enhance their understanding of justice. By exploring scripture and reflecting on its teachings, students will learn to apply these principles to their own lives, fostering a deeper sense of empathy and responsibility towards others.
Social and Emotional Wellbeing
The Wellbeing focus for Term Three is ‘Emotional Literacy- Positive Coping’. This unit will focus on how students' emotional responses influence behaviour, learning and relationships. Students will explore and analyse factors that influence their ability to regulate their emotions and learn a range of coping strategies. During the unit students will Identify the influence of self-talk on their actions and emotions. As well as focussing on the factors that influence effective communication in a variety of situations.
