Decoding Museum Excursion

On Tuesday, 23rd April, a group of students from the Decoding Program went to the Museum to celebrate the incredible improvements they had all made to their literacy. The students chose the museum as the venue for their celebration and led the teachers into the city and to the Melbourne Museum for an exploration of the displays. They visited the First People’s Gallery, the Melbourne Exhibition and the Dynamic Earth exhibition. Highlights included being dwarfed by the towering elegance of the Exhibition Building and learning about its role in the birth of the nation. Another highlight was watching the displays which explored the culture of the local first people, including Bunjil, the creator deity of the Kulin nation, shown as a wedge-tail eagle in flight. It was also fun exploring a home from the 1860s and comparing it to the comforts of our lives in 2024. For the staff, it was a real pleasure to share genuine curiosity and wonder with students throughout the day.
