What's On In 1/2

Overview
English
This term in English, we will continue to develop students’ reading skills, including decoding (phonics) and fluency. Students will learn to visualise and self-monitor as they read. We will also explore the work of authors such as Bob Graham, examining how he engages readers through his choice of words and illustrations.
Handwriting remains a priority. Students are learning helpful mnemonics, such as:
- “First draw the bat, then draw the ball” for the letter b
- “First draw the doorknob, then draw the door” for the letter d
- “First draw the stick, then draw the lollipop” for the letter p
In addition, students will create their own narrative stories and present information in a variety of ways to demonstrate their understanding of the knowledge they have gained.
Maths
This term in Mathematics, we will focus on addition and subtraction. Students will use a range of concrete materials to support their understanding, alongside applying their place value knowledge to solve equations mentally. They will also explore analogue and digital clocks, as well as calendars. In addition, students will investigate counting patterns, sequence numbers, and use number lines to support their learning.
Integrated Studies
Students will investigate technology within their own homes, comparing early models of appliances with their modern-day equivalents. They will explore how technology has developed and changed over time, and discuss how their own lives are influenced by its use.
Students will also examine the impact of technology on the community and investigate technological developments on a global scale. They will consider how technology has shaped the world, while also reflecting on some of the challenges and potential issues it can create.
Wellbeing
This term, during wellbeing sessions, students will continue to learn about each other’s strengths and areas for growth while building positive relationships. They will explore a range of strategies to cope positively in different situations, including facing fears, managing anger, problem solving, and recognising personal and cultural strengths.
Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden.
We are excited for students to begin their learning experiences in the kitchen. This provides a valuable opportunity for them to apply their Maths and Literacy skills in meaningful, real-world contexts. Learning is most effective when it is purposeful and connected to everyday life.
Students will attend the kitchen and garden every fortnight, where Lauren and Ashley will guide them through a range of cooking, gardening, and cleaning activities.
