ANZAC DAY CEREMONY
As we returned for Term 2, we were privileged to come together as a school community for our ANZAC Day Ceremony - a moving and heartfelt occasion honouring the courage, sacrifice and service of those who have served, and continue to serve, our country. Congratulations to our Grade 6 Leaders for conducting such a meaningful and respectful service, and to the school choir for their beautiful and moving performance of the national anthems.
HISTORICAL NARRATIVES
The Grade 5 students have been thoroughly enjoying learning about historical events as part of our Historical Narrative unit. They have conducted extensive research, gathered detailed notes and are now transforming their knowledge into engaging narratives. Some of the most popular topics chosen include the Titanic, the Moon Landing and the Eureka Stockade.
Here is a sample from a historical narrative written by Danuji in 5KH based on the Eureka Stockade.
‘I woke up and checked my calendar. Wednesday 29 November 1854. It was a nice day like any other, but today there was a chilly breeze. I left the bathroom to brush my pearly whites. I then put on my big, black leather boots, and pants that felt like sandpaper.
“All miners shall report to Yarrowee River now!” I collected my things to ensure I followed the orders.
FOOTY MATHS
In Mathematics, our Grade 5 students have been deepening their mathematical understanding through a range of engaging AFL-themed learning experiences. Students thoroughly enjoyed participating in kicking and handball competitions to collect and record data, which they then used to create graphs, compare results and interpret different data sets. These activities provided meaningful opportunities for students to apply their understanding of data in a fun and interactive way.
As part of our real-world learning experiences, students also planned a trip to the footy for their families, where they created simple budgets, calculated costs and managed money to purchase footy merchandise. In addition, students developed their understanding of time by adding and subtracting minutes when planning schedules and activities. It has been wonderful to see the enthusiasm, collaboration and engagement students have demonstrated throughout these hands-on Mathematical learning experiences.
CHANGE
Our Integrated Studies unit on Change has been highly engaging for our students. Throughout the unit, students are developing their understanding of Australian history and exploring significant events and people that have helped shape our nation. As part of their learning, students are investigating how Australian colonies developed over time and the reasons behind these changes. They are exploring how colonial settlement impacted the environment, examining key events and influential individuals who shaped the colonies, and considering how Australian society evolved throughout the twentieth century. Students are also exploring migration to Australia, learning about the diverse groups of people who came to Australia and the reasons why they chose to settle here.
DISTRICT CROSS COUNTRY
On Tuesday 12th May, a group of Grade 5 students proudly represented Oatlands at the District Cross Country. The dedication and training they put in beforehand truly paid off, with every student achieving outstanding results. Their determination, resilience, and positive team spirit were evident throughout the day and greatly admired by all in attendance. A special celebration is in order - thanks to the incredible collective effort, the Oatlands Cross Country Team secured an impressive 2nd place overall! We’re also thrilled to have some students advancing to the Division Cross Country. We wish them the very best as they take on the next stage of their journey. Go Oatlands!
