Student Leadership Conference

On Tuesday 5 May, the Senior School student leaders and house captains travelled to Adelaide University in Mt Gambier to attend the GRIP Student Leadership Conference. GRIP is an organisation that provides leadership training for school students at venues across Australia.

Throughout the day, our student leaders were encouraged to reflect on their leadership roles and consider how they can positively influence and serve others within our school community. Students explored the responsibilities that come with leadership and gained practical ideas for making King’s College a welcoming and encouraging places for all students.

The conference sessions were engaging, interactive, and enjoyable, with students also participating in workshops that expanded on the key themes presented throughout the day.

These workshops provided opportunities for students to discuss ideas, collaborate with other schools, and develop practical leadership strategies. Our student leaders have a servant heart. Please pray that God will continue to grow their leadership capacity.

I look forward to continuing to work with our student leadership team as they put their learning into action throughout the year.

Year 12 Careers Camp

From 30 April to 1 May, our Year 12 students travelled to Melbourne for their annual Careers Camp - a valuable opportunity to explore future study, career, and life pathways as they prepare for the final stages of their schooling journey.

Using CYC City as a base, students visited both Torrens University and The University of Melbourne. These visits provided students with insight into two very different university environments, course structures, and entry pathways. Students learned more about tertiary study options, university life, and the bonus ATAR opportunities available to students from regional and remote areas. Campus tours and presentations helped students begin thinking more seriously about their plans beyond Year 12.

A highlight of the camp was a visit to Victoria’s State Parliament. As many of our Year 12 students will turn 18 this year and be eligible to vote in the upcoming Victorian election, the visit provided an important opportunity to learn more about the Victorian parliamentary system, how laws are made, and the responsibilities of active citizenship. Students toured Parliament House and had the opportunity to meet with Bev McArthur, Member of the Legislative Council for Western Victoria, who spoke with students about her role in Parliament and the importance of civic engagement.

Students also attended the VCE and Careers Expo, where they were able to engage with a wide variety of universities, training organisations, employers, and industry representatives. The expo gave students the opportunity to ask questions, collect information, and explore potential career pathways in areas they may not have previously considered.

On Thursday evening, students enjoyed an exciting Escape Room activity, which encouraged teamwork, communication, and problem-solving while also providing a fun social experience together.

Overall, the Careers Camp was an enjoyable and worthwhile experience that challenged students to think about their futures and the opportunities ahead. Please uphold our Year 12 students in prayer as they continue their studies this year.

Year 10

Youth Alpha Retreat

Year 10 spent three days at the start of Week 3, at Portland Bay Lodge on our Youth Alpha Retreat. This is the fourth year we have focused our Year 10 camp around topics associated with the Youth Alpha course being studied in Christian Studies. Through a combination of filmed material and discussions we explored ideas around prayer, the Holy Spirit and healing. We also had a Q&A session where some really thoughful questions were asked.

Alongside the ‘serious’, there was also plenty of time for fun. We dodged the weather to still manage a night game, a campfire and a beach walk with sandcastle building competition which saw Lainie and Lilly take out the honours. There was lots of chocolate and marshmallow eating, minute to win it, trivia and other team building activities as well as the usual board and card games. We finished camp with a visit to ‘Pins and Play’ Ten Pin Bowling back here in Warrnambool. Well done Matthew P as the overall champion with the highest score.

A big thank you to Michael Tucker for accompanying us on camp, and to all the Year 10 students. It was great to see everyone including one another and also willingly jumping in to help in the kitchen with meal preparation and dishes.

VCE VM Warrnambool Police Station Visit

Last week, our VCE VM students visited the Warrnambool Police Station, where they were given an engaging tour by Senior Constable Brooke Pollock.

Students had the opportunity to explore the forensics unit and even try their hand at taking fingerprints. They also visited the custody area and met with detectives, gaining valuable insight into the wide range of careers within the police force.

It was a highly informative and interesting experience, helping students see real-world career pathways in action. A big thank you to the Neil Porter Legacy for organising these valuable opportunities for our students.
