WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING (3 of 3)

GENERATIONS IN JAZZ

BY HANNAH DENNY, DIMITRI WILLENBERG AND IVAN SESKIS

BHCS Music has been buzzing with excitement after our success at Generations in Jazz. Since the beginning of Term 1, students of the Senior Choir and Jazz Band have been attending rehearsals every week using their God given talents to express themselves musically. Prior to this amazing weekend, our students performed at the Belgrave Heights Seniors Convention, in preparation for this event.

At the festival, The Senior Choir sang incredibly with such passion and precision. Later in the day, our Jazz Combo entertained the masses with an amazing combination of samba and jazz. Finally, the afternoon ended with the top-quality stylings of the Jazz Band. The small Jazz combo came 2nd in their Division against some of the most elite schools, and were also awarded the Spirit of Generations in Jazz award. Both of which came with awards and money prizes, and a free workshop with an adjudicator from GIJ.

While on a high as we trekked on our long journey home, we were also updated with the news that our very own Flynn was awarded a place in the Division 4+ Superband, for his incredible Trombone playing in the jazz band during their performance. Well done!!!

Colossians 3:17:  "And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him."

CSEN CHESS COMPETITION 2026

BY JENNY SIMMONS (SECONDARY MATHS TEACHER)

Commonly known as the ‘Game of Kings,’ chess is a wonderful game for our students. It encourages them to think ahead, stay engaged, and remain calm under pressure, all while learning how to win and lose with grace.

This year the Secondary CSEN chess tournament was held at the Chadstone Bowls Club on Tues 28th April. A total of 98 students took part, each playing seven games over the course of the day. Our enthusiastic group finished ninth out of the nine teams, putting in a great effort from start to finish. Waverley Christian College (Wantirna) were once again crowned the tournament champions .

Congratulations to all our students who competed, with special congratulations to our two top players Riley J (Y11) and Elroy T (Y10).

A special mention to our three Year 7 students - Indiana D, Dominic M and Elliot N -  who were undaunted by the challenge of possibly competing against VCE students.

A super effort with each winning three of their matches.

2026 GLOBAL LANGUAGENUT PRIMARY COMPETITION

BY ELENA AGACHE (FRENCH TEACHER)

The French Primary Department was buzzing with excitement from 20 April to 6 May 2026 as our talented students in Years 3 to 6 took part in the prestigious Global Languagenut Primary Competition. Competing against schools from across the globe, our students dedicated themselves to mastering new vocabulary, sharpening their grammar, and earning points through a variety of interactive challenges.

This competition is a highlight of our academic calendar as it goes beyond the classroom, fostering a genuine sense of global citizenship and building the confidence necessary to communicate in a second language. By engaging with the platform, our students have not only improved their fluency but also demonstrated incredible perseverance and a passion for cultural discovery. The effort displayed by our Years 3 to 6 cohort was nothing short of fantastic, with students frequently topping the leaderboards through sheer determination.

To celebrate these outstanding achievements, we are delighted to announce a range of rewards for the top performers across all participating schools, including Amazon vouchers for those who ranked at the very top of the global competition. In addition, the top 5 winners from our school will receive official certificates and gift vouchers valued up to $50. Furthermore, recognition also extends to participants who ranked from sixth to tenth place, who will each be rewarded with bags of delicious European chocolates alongside their achievement certificates.

We are immensely proud of everystudent who participated and represented our school so brilliantly on the world stage. Bravo to all our language participants!
