Spotlight on Learning - Water Dragon

This term in the Water Dragon Pod, Year 2 students have been learning about living and non-living things in Science, with a focus on using the scientific method. We have explored how plants are living things and follow a life cycle as they grow. Students learned what plants need to survive, including water, sunlight, soil and air, and used scientific vocabulary to help them talk and write about their experiments. They then set up their own bean jar investigations, following step-by-step instructions and making predictions about what might happen. Yesterday, we completed the setup of our experiment, and the children had so much fun getting everything ready and starting their investigations! Over the next week, students will carefully observe the changes in their beans and record their findings in their special science diaries. They are learning how scientists observe, describe and track changes over time.
Building on our English focus on character writing last term, students transferred their understanding of appearance and personality into Visual Arts by creating self-portraits. They first explored a range of artworks to examine how artists' creative choices such as facial expressions, texture, and colour to convey different traits. Students then closely observed their own features and experimented with a variety of media and mark-making techniques to produce expressive representations of themselves.
