A spotlight on a student making change!
When the school library was no longer an option at recess and lunchtime, some students quickly realised how much they missed having a peaceful place to read. One of those students was Lucy, a Year 3 pupil who loved getting lost in stories during break times. Without the library, she noticed that children were trying to read in crowded, noisy areas and many simply gave up.
Lucy decided something had to be done. She started brainstorming ideas for how to bring back a quiet reading space, even without the library. After a lot of thinking and talking with teachers, Lucy found a simple but brilliant solution using a spare classroom by the rooftop during lunch.
With permission, Lucy created posters and spoke to each class to let them know that students could enjoy reading books in peace. Lucy’s idea showed that even small changes can make a big difference and that students have the power to solve problems when they speak up and get creative.
A short word from Lucy:
We have opened a book club for the kids who don't like the craziness of the playground. It's on every Monday and Thursday at lunch time. Bring a book to read and if you don’t have one you can just do coloring. This week there were 24 people who came to the book club isn't that surprising! Meet at the library double doors and do not stop at the library follow us the whole way up to the rooftop!
