What's Happening in the Senior School

Year 5

What’s Happening in Year 5 in Weeks 9, 10 & 11

Welcome to Weeks 9,10 & 11 of Term 4, we hope everyone is excited for what’s to come!

In Week 6 & 7, we completed our Year 5 Bike Ed program. The students were really impressive with their conduct throughout the week, a big congratulations to all of Year 5. We focused on our road skills such as left and right hand turns, driveway exits, and how to approach a roundabout. After our week of skills, all students went on a ride to St. Bedes College, which was really nice to implement what we learnt the week before. Thank you very much to all of the parent volunteers who were involved through the week, we could not have completed the program without you.

More recently, the students completed their Leadership applications for 2026. Every student should be commended for this, as it was done very thoughtfully with a lot of passion towards the school and the specific roles shown. We would particuarly like to thank the students that presented to the year level and teachers as a part of the School Captain and Vice Captain roles.

As an end of year celebration, Year 5  will be going on our Bike Hike on Friday the 12th of December. This gives us a chance to demonstrate the skills we learnt in Bike Ed, as we ride to Bicentennial Park in Chelsea. We still require volunteers for this. If you are available and would like to help out, please register via this link:

Over the next few weeks, Year 5 students will...

Wellbeing

Students will learn how to recognise emotions and engage in positive self-talk through Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships lessons.

Literacy

Students have completed our novel titled ‘Can You See Me’ and the associated sentence and text level activities. We will continue the Word Origins spelling lessons. Well done to the students for their investment into our class novel this term.

Students are completing a ‘Buddy Book’ for their new buddies in Year 6. A lot of effort has been put into this, keep up the good work!

Maths

We have completed our angles unit and now will be progressing into statistics and probability. Students have completed a lot of testing of late, we appreciate the effort shown towards this. Thank you for your effort throughout the year, we look forward to finishing off our remaining unit with you all.

Knowledge Unit

As part of our Health Knowledge Unit, students will be explaining how influential people may impact the way individuals see themselves and influence their developing identities, for example parents, friends, coaches, sporting role models and influencers. They will investigate how beliefs and cultural practices contribute to the development of positive self identities. Students will also be researching sources of health information and places where they can seek help at home, school and in the community. They have explored the Kids Helpline website, kids 5-12yrs page. If you would like to visit the site with your child you can access it here: Kids 5-12 Years | How Can we Help? | Kids Helpline

Students are completing a Podcast in groups based on a health related question that they would like to explore. This has just begun, with teams of 5 working together to present a well researched podcast. It has been fun so far and we are very keen to hear the end product.

Year 6

What’s Happening in Year 6 in Weeks 9, 10 & 11

Our Year 6 students have been working hard building their BPS businesses, finalising their products, completing the making process, budgeting carefully, and preparing for the big day. Alongside their Economics work, they have also been writing personal reflection pieces for their Memory Books, enjoying the chance to go down memory lane and capture special moments from their Prep–Year 6 journey. Recently, students also enjoyed their Lifesaving Day - despite the lack of sunshine, they had a fantastic time and even learned important CPR and first aid skills. They then had a fabulous time at the Colour Run Day, supporting their peers with enthusiasm and helping raise an impressive amount of funds for the school.

Wellbeing

In the coming two weeks, our Year 6 students will continue working on completing their Memory Books. Alongside the stories they have written for each year level, students will also be writing a letter to their future selves and decorating their books to create a personalised keepsake. While they have access to some scrapbooking materials at school, students are encouraged to bring additional items from home to help them add their own creative touch. Through this process, students will reflect on their primary school journey and celebrate the growth, achievements, and memories that have shaped their time at Beaumaris Primary School.

Knowledge Unit

Our Year 6 students have been fully immersed in our Economics Knowledge Unit, a rich cross-curricular project that has drawn on skills from both Literacy and Numeracy. After developing their own business ideas, students budgeted for materials, calculated costs, and forecasted potential sales using their Numeracy skills. In Literacy, they have created a range of marketing materials - including posters, product pitches, and radio advertisements - and will continue refining these as Market Day approaches.

With products now manufactured and branding underway, students are excited to share their hard work at the Year 6 Market Day on Friday 5th December, where they will be selling their creations to BPS students. This unit has provided valuable real-world learning, strengthening students’ financial literacy, communication skills, creativity, and teamwork as they experience what it truly means to run a small business.

Homework

Students are expected to read for a minimum of 15-30 minutes, five times a week, to improve their reading skills. We encourage students to bring in their diaries every Monday to show their teacher what they have read each week.  Additionally, they will receive Mathletics tasks every fortnight to reinforce and build on their mathematical knowledge. Please check to see if there are any new tasks assigned on Mathletics.
