What's Happening in the Middle School

Year 3
What’s Happening in Year 3 in Weeks 9, 10 & 11
We’ve enjoyed a wonderful mix of learning and fun, and it has been a joy watching the students grow in their confidence, curiosity and resilience. As we head into the final weeks, we have many exciting activities planned to celebrate our year together, including wreath making, Christmas crafts, a special class lunch, and an African drumming session.
Throughout the year, the students have embraced new challenges, from strengthening their reading and writing, to exploring maths concepts, engaging in creative projects, and developing their teamwork and problem-solving skills. It has truly been a pleasure teaching them and seeing the progress they’ve made both academically and socially.
As we wrap up the year, we want to congratulate each student on their hard work and wish them all the very best as they move into Year 4. We are incredibly proud of everything they have achieved and know they will continue to shine.
Wellbeing
Students are proud of the pledges they’ve made to uphold our shared responsibility of being caring community members. They will be sharing these pledges with one another, and some will present them at assembly in Week 9.
As we begin the transition to next year, we’re working more at a cohort level and creating opportunities for students to mix with peers from other classes. This helps broaden their connections and strengthen our sense of community. One exciting activity we have planned is a Christmas Native Wreath-making session in Week 10, where students will collaborate across classes in a creative and festive way.
Literacy
Our students have worked incredibly hard this year as we introduced our new UFLI Phonics program. To finish the year, we’ll be revisiting vowel teams and diphthongs, continuing to build reading fluency, and refining neat, consistent cursive handwriting. As the year comes to a close, in our literature lessons we will be spending time exploring the language, rhythm, and imagination of poetry. From examining how poets shape emotions with just a few lines to experimenting with our own creative voices, it’s been a meaningful way to reflect, connect, and end the year with curiosity and inspiration.
Maths
Students will finish their unit on mass and then move to capacity. Multiplication facts remain a focus, as they have been all year. Please continue to support your child with committing these to memory. The better their recall of number facts, the easier the move to Year 4 will be.
Knowledge Unit
As we move into the final few weeks of our science unit, students are learning to investigate the properties and materials used in the buildings around our school. They will explore a selected building from our community, identify the different materials used in it's construction, and create a detailed, labelled diagram to show their observations. Students will also explain why certain materials were chosen, considering qualities such as strength, durability, and weather resistance. Through this hands-on inquiry, students connect scientific concepts to real-world design, developing a deeper understanding of how material properties influence the way buildings are made.
Reminders
- All Library books to be returned to school
- Please pay/consent for any activities you wish your child to participate in on Compass
Year 4
What’s Happening in Year 4 in Weeks 9, 10 & 11
The final ‘What’s Happening’ for the year is now upon us! It is hard to believe we are now in the month of December.
The Colour Run was a wonderful success. The students all had an incredible time and the money raised will certainly be put to good use.
Bike Ed. in Year 4 was enjoyed by all who participated. The weather proved to be a little bit of a challenge with a couple of grades having to ride their bikes in a light shower of drizzle. All the students were very good natured about this and the teachers who continued their lesson, should also be congratulated!
During the final weeks of school, the students will be completing Christmas crafts, singing at the Christmas Carols, as well as enjoying an end of year celebratory lunch.
The Year 4 teachers would like to take this opportunity to thank all the students and their families for all their support throughout the year as well as wish everyone a safe and festive summer holiday. See you in 2026!
Wellbeing
Students will be participating in a program specifically focused on reminding students who they can ask for help. Students will be identifying trusted people in their lives and how to identify problems that require adult assistance.
Literacy
The Year 4 students will be watching ‘Nim’s Island’ at school in Week 10. They will then be comparing the differences and similarities with the book.
Maths
Over the coming two weeks, maths sessions will be focusing on revision of the four processes. The students will also be playing maths games throughout the final weeks of school.
Knowledge Unit
Our Knowledge Unit in Term 4 is geography. Some of the questions we've been investigating include;
- How are the continents of Australia, Africa and South America similar and different?
- What are the geographical features and cultural practices that make these places unique?
- How do people and animals in different climate zones adapt to their environments?
Homework
The Year 4 students are expected to read every night and record their progress in their personal diaries. It is the responsibility of the student to bring their diary to school every day and take it home each night to log their reading. Classroom teachers will be checking and signing these diaries regularly to monitor student reading habits. The student diary will also be used to highlight important dates and reminders.
