FOCUS, ATTENTION AND REGULATION – Why They Matter

Paying attention and staying focused are skills that help students get the most out of learning. In the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model (VTLM 2.0), the Elements of Learning highlight that self-regulation, attention, and persistence grow through clear routines, consistent expectations, and positive relationships. When students understand what focus looks and feels like, they are better able to engage and learn with confidence.

Families play a key role in this process. When teachers and families share the same messages about learning and behaviour, students know what’s expected both at school and at home. These shared understandings strengthen relationships across our school community, creating a calm and connected environment where everyone can thrive.

At Carnegie Primary School, we recognise that attention and focus are teachable skills. In 2026, CPS will partner with Classroom Mastery to strengthen our whole-school approach to positive behaviour and classroom practice. This partnership will support the consistent use of evidence-based routines that help students feel safe, focused, and ready to learn every day.

By working together — teachers, families, and students — we can create classrooms where every child develops the habits and confidence to stay on task and succeed.

INVESTING IN EXCELLENCE: Our Teachers Attend Steplab Coaching Training

Early this term, a group of our school leaders and teachers participated in the Steplab Coaching Training, an exciting professional learning opportunity focused on strengthening instructional coaching and feedback practices.

The Steplab model supports teachers to refine their practice through short, focused coaching cycles — combining clear modelling, practice, and feedback to build lasting impact in the classroom. By engaging in this training, our staff are continuing to grow their expertise in evidence-based teaching and collaborative reflection, ensuring that every student benefits from high-quality instruction.

This professional learning marks an exciting step forward for our school. As our teachers continue to apply and share what they’ve learned, we look forward to seeing this work deepen our collective practice and enhance learning outcomes across all classrooms.
