Secondary News

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Term 3 is underway and it is a time of much excitement and productivity across the College.

Our 2024 Year 12 cohort are preparing for the end of the schooling journey, with University preferences and discussions on the impending ATAR’s in abundance.

Our Year 10 cohort are back safely with us after an amazing week skiing at Mount Baw Baw. The camp was a huge success with all our students learning new skills, bonding together and enjoying what was for many, their first snow experience. The camp staff were really impressed with our students' behaviour and their resilience. Whilst we thank all the staff who attended, we would especially like to thank Mr Josh Rosaia who was the camp leader and Mr Stephen Jones for all their hard work behind the scenes to organise and manage the event. Due to their due diligence and enthusiasm the camp ran smoothly and was enjoyed by all.

Already this term, we have celebrated many successes for both the sporting and academic sectors. Our Year 8 boys table tennis team were Runners up at the Division competition and our Intermediate Girls teams advancing to the Regional competition. Our Senior girls basketball team won their Division and will compete in the Regional competition in early september.  Please refer below for further details.

The Year 9 and 10 2024 subject information evening was held in week 2.  It was wonderful to see so many students and family members attend. This event provided an opportunity for parents, guardians and students to learn about the academic curriculum, course options and subject selections for Year 9 and 10. Understanding the available subjects and their implications can help students make informed decisions about their educational pathways.

The annual VCE Information evening was another huge success this week providing an opportunity for our senior students and their families to discuss their VCE subject selections for 2025. The College wishes to thank our VCE teachers for their enthusiasm and dedication in supporting our students and their families as this information session provides valuable information for our students in supporting their VCE pathway.

This year the College is extending our Bookweek celebrations into the Secondary school at our students request.  All secondary students are encouraged to dress up as their favourite book character and take part in the bookweek parade with our Primary school. This will take place on Friday 23rd of August, families are welcome to come and watch their child in the parade at 9 am.

Year 10 Snow Camp

This year, our Year 10 cohort had the fantastic opportunity to visit the snow at Mt Baw Baw for their annual camp - some seeing snow for the first time! What followed was an incredible week of fun, growth and forging stronger friendships.

Our students took to the ski slopes and did an amazing job of testing themselves, learning new skills and building resilience, whilst encouraging each other along the way. They participated in a games night including table tennis, pool and various activities, as well as a movie night to bunker down and beat the cold!

Overall, it was an overwhelmingly positive experience for all involved.

Our Year 11 VCE English students recently had the exciting opportunity to attend a special screening of the film Barbie at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI). This immersive experience was part of their current study module, allowing them to explore and analyse the film in greater depth.

The event featured a thought-provoking lecture from an academic expert in film studies, who offered valuable insights into the film's themes, narrative techniques, and cultural impact. This analysis helped students understand the underlying messages and artistic choices within the film, enriching their ongoing discussions in the classroom.

Lakeside Year 8 Table Tennis Players Up for the Contest at Interschool

An unusual silence descended amongst spectators to the final match of the interschool Year 8 Boys table tennis competition on Friday 26th July at the Dandenong Table Tennis Centre.

The Lakeside Year 8 boys team had up to then, won all of their matches up to that time with impressive wins against the teams from other schools. The point to make here is that it was not just winning but the manner in which that had happened. Our students, while determined, skilled and energetic, were generous and polite to the students from other schools and a stand-out in their positive attitudes and sportsmanship. An indication of this was our team noticing that an opposing player, in an early match, did not have a bat to play with, so one of our Lakeside bats was loaned to them for the day.

In that last match of the day we were up against the formidable Kambrya side, made up of seasoned and highly skilled players, who could throw the ball up high on serve and impart clever variations of spin, placement and pace in rallies. As the match unfolded, Kambrya learnt that it was not going to be easy to top our players, as a crowd gathered around the table. The points were played in silence but loud cheers erupted from supporters of either side as points were won or lost through the games. In the end, Kambrya prevailed and we congratulated them on their win. As runners-up for the day Lakeside emerged proud of their efforts, attaining 17 points, close to the 20 points of our final opponents. In many ways our students were winners too, if you take into account how they played the game.

2024 Senior and Intermediate Table Tennis

On Tuesday 16 July, a team of five Senior School girls and six Senior School boys travelled to the Dandenong Table Tennis Complex to compete in the SSV Interschool Table Tennis Competition.

The team members:

Senior Girls Team

Thevanya, Henifha, Maddison, Poppy, Tiana

Senior Boys Team

Kosala, Bryce, Dom, Rylan, Jamie, Saij (absent)

Both teams have been training during recess and lunchtime leading up to the competition, making use of two indoor tables and one outdoor table in the senior school. Their efforts were duly rewarded with the Girls’ team achieving First Place in the 2024 Southern Metropolitan Sports Region – Cardinia – Senior Girls Table Tennis Competition which qualified them to participate in the Regional Final on 30 July.

While the boys’ team did not place, it was wonderful to see their top level skills and great sportsmanship on display. There were countless magnificent rallies, and impressive winning shots. The Regional Finals saw a collection of the most skilled teams in the district compete for a place in the State Finals. The Senior Girls Team played with great courage and commitment, coming out as Runners Up in the 2024 Regional Finals. An integral aspect of sporting competition is the camaraderie and connections students make in the context of sport. On this point, Lakeside students are exemplary both in their behaviour and their regard for others.

Some examples from competition day:

1. When opposition teams risked forfeiting their game because they did not realise they were scheduled to play at that particular time, OUR STUDENTS went searching for them to ensure that had an even chance in the competition.

2. When 'scorers' could not be found and games were delayed, OUR STUDENTS stepped into the role to keep the competition day rolling smoothly.

3. When OUR STUDENTS noticed the opposing team had old and damaged paddles, OUR STUDENTS offered them the use of our new paddles to ensure fair competition.

4. When OUR STUDENTS completed every game, they always approached the opposing team with either congratulations or words of encouragement.

For me, this is the value in sports events and other similar activities at Lakeside... the opportunity for students to grow in their compassion for others, to develop their sense of fair play, and display respect for those around them. On these points, Lakeside were absolute WINNERS.

So proud of our teams,

Grace Powell (coach)
