Workshops
Sexual Health Victoria - Hygiene and Anatomy
On Monday the 29th of July, Kardie from Sexual Health Victoria led the students in an anatomy and hygiene workshop.
Kardie began with an activity in which students came up with words for body parts, using the letters BODY PARTS. Students suggested body parts and Kardie wrote them on the board. Students engaged well and were able to come up with many different words for each letter. Kardie then asked students to clarify whether the words on the board were slang or proper words. Kardie helped students highlight the different settings where these words wou be used, such as with friends as opposed to a doctor.
Students completed a worksheet where they matched up numbers on a diagram to the correct anatomical names of parts of the reproductive system. Kardie then led a discussion to clarify whether students were correct in their identifications and explained what each part does.
To finish off the session, Kardie explained why it is important to keep our body parts clean and clarified what should be done to maintain proper hygiene to keep the body safe. Students identified what their understanding of proper hygiene was, and Kardie further clarified these suggestions.
REACH Foundation Workshop
On Tuesday the 23rd of July, Daphne, Katie, Kira, and Hazel from the Reach Foundation came to facilitate a workshop on peer dynamics for PRC students.
Katie and Daphne began with some ice breakers, including a music trivia game in which students were tasked to guess the song title and artist that was playing.
Daphne and Katie shared some anecdotes from their youth, explaining how they struggled with mental health during their school years, and how opening up to professionals and focusing on improving their mental health and wellbeing helped improve their lives. Daphne and Katie then opened the discussion for questions, allowing students to ask questions they felt related to their lives as well.
Daphne and Katie then led an activity where students judged celebrities and shared their opinions, feelings or thoughts about them. Then, students were asked to share judgements and names people have said about them. Students engaged well in this discussion, with some students sharing how these judgements and insults made them feel. This discussion then turned towards students sharing their experiences with bullying, they were honest about their feelings during this time.
Katie and Daphne then led an activity called step to the circle, in which students in a circle stepped forward when the statements made by the presenters related to them. During this activity, students acknowledged their own feelings and learned that many other students have similar feelings and experiences to them.
