Learning Community 3

5/6 Glenys Howard and Levi Hudson

Welcome to Gen and her team from Anglicare!

Our grade 6 students had their first session last week which was aimed at everyone getting to know each other and understanding that all children have a number of rights, one of which is the right to feel safe.

The aim of this week's session was to identify the conditions necessary for children to feel safe, and who is able to help with these.

The sessions are a mix of story telling, games, written activities and drama. Everyone is enjoying themselves and learning a lot at the same time.

Grade 5 students have begun their Leadership training by learning about the 16 Habits of the Mind. These character traits are often most notable in our leaders and people who have overcome trauma to excel in life. They have watched some inspirational video clips about people and identified the Habits of the Mind that have most helped them. They have also completed a self assessment to try to identify the Habits of the mind they use and ones they could try to develop in themselves.

We are learning about calculating volume in maths, and the difference between volume and capacity. In reading we are focussing on setting, especially how a setting can show something about culture, or character. Writing lessons are centred around biographies. After writing our own autobigraphies, we are researching our current olympians and para-olympians and writing biographies about them. We have learnt some very interesting things about our athletes.

It was lovely to catch up with all our families during the Parent Teacher Interviews. Thank you for making the time to see us!
