Syntax and English

Over the past year, our school has been looking at how we can continue to improve our teaching of English. As a teaching staff we have looked at the importance of the teaching of syntax and morphology and how these are important aspects of English and Literacy. Syntax refers to the set of rules and principles that govern the structure of sentences in a language. It dictates how words are arranged to convey meaning effectively. Mastering syntax allows children to construct clear, coherent sentences and understand the relationships between words and phrases.

Supporting Your Child's Syntactic Development

As parents and educators, we play a vital role in helping children grasp the complexities of syntax. Here are some practical strategies to support your child's syntactic development:

  1. Reading Aloud: Regularly reading aloud to your child exposes them to diverse sentence structures and rhythms of language. Discuss the sentences, pointing out how the arrangement of words affects the meaning and flow.
  2. Sentence Building Activities: Engage your child in activities that involve constructing sentences. Use word cards or magnetic words to create sentences together. This hands-on approach helps children experiment with different word orders and understand sentence structure.
  3. Interactive Storytelling: Encourage your child to tell stories, whether verbally or in writing. Prompt them to expand on their sentences, adding details and varying sentence types. This practice enhances their ability to form complex sentences and improves their overall syntactic awareness.
  4. Grammar Games: Incorporate grammar-based games and activities into your routine. Games like Mad Libs, sentence jumbles, and syntax-focused board games make learning syntax fun and interactive.
  5. Modelling and Feedback: Be a model of good syntax by using varied and complex sentences in your everyday conversations. Provide gentle corrections and explanations when your child makes syntactic errors, helping them understand how to improve their sentence structures.

The Impact of Syntax on Communication and Literacy

A strong grasp of syntax is essential for effective communication and literacy skills. Children who understand syntactic rules can express their ideas more clearly and comprehend complex texts more easily. This foundational skill also supports other areas of language development, including vocabulary, reading comprehension, and writing.

Encouraging Syntactic Exploration

Encourage your child to be curious about language. Ask them questions about sentence structure and challenge them to create sentences with different patterns. Discuss the roles of subjects, predicates, and modifiers, helping them see how each component contributes to the overall meaning.

Syntax is a crucial element of language development that enables children to communicate effectively and understand written texts. By incorporating engaging activities and providing consistent support, we can help our children develop strong syntactic skills and a deeper appreciation for the intricacies of language. Syntax can be quite a difficult concept to understand so hopefully this will help in explaining what it is and how parents can help their children navigate it.
