FRED WARD (SVC 1980-87) ARCHITECT
Fred’s face crossed my radar a couple of times recently - in the 2024 Tasmanian Architectural Awards supplement in the Mercury and in the Eastern Shore Sun at the opening of the Alma St (Bellerive) Early Learning Centre, for which Fred’s firm - 1+2 Architecture – provided the design. Google provided the following about this former student:
FRED WARD - ARCHITECT FRAIA B ARCH (HONS) BA. ENV. DES.
Fred Ward is an accomplished and recognised architect with over 30 years of local, national, and international experience. He understands the impact of environments on quality of life and through his practice, seeks to find harmonious and sustainable relationships between people and place.
Fred graduated with honours from the University of Tasmania in 1992 and first registered as an architect in Victoria in 1998. He then worked in London, on projects across the UK, Europe, and the USA before returning home to lutruwita/Tasmania and co-founding 1+2 Architecture in 2002.
An active member of the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA), Fred has served as an invited final-year tutor and examiner at the University of Tasmania School of Architecture. He has also been a jury member for the AIA awards program on multiple occasions, serving as the main jury chair in 2024.
In 2022, Fred was awarded the title of Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects, recognizing his outstanding contributions to the field.
Fred’s son Ned attended the College from 2016-19. Fred’s male siblings also attended the College - Michael, Brian, Peter, and Martin. A phone call to their mother, Jenny, provided a further insight into the family story.
Jenny is the daughter of Brian Mulcahy, a day-one student at the College in 1911. In time, she married (Albert) ‘Mick’ Ward, who attended the College from 1943-48. Jenny and Mick had eight children – three girls and five boys. Mick passed away in 1997.
What of Fred’s brothers?
Michael (SVC 1966-71) is a journalist and has worked in Hobart, Launceston, PNG, Singapore, Melbourne, Sydney, and is now back in Hobart. Two of his sons, Brian and Patrick, are also former students.
Brian (SVC 1967-70) worked as a Centrelink manager in Hobart, Sydney, Port Macquarie, and Brisbane, before having a change – he now manages Inspiration Paint Shops in Brisbane. His two lads, Matthew and Geoff, are also OV’s.
Peter (SVC 1969-75) worked as a law clerk for about 10 years before opting to establish his own landscape business.
Martin (SVC 1972-79) is the Global Chief Operating Officer for the Dulux Group – this group are the owners of household names such as Dulux, British Paints, Cabots, Selleys, White King, Yates, Seasol, and B&D.
