Early Offers for 2025 courses in WA

APPLYING FOR 2025 UNIVERSITY ADMISSION

University applications through TISC opened on Wednesday 1 May 2024. An updated list of important dates and deadlines is available on the TISC website

Year 12 students applying to Curtin University, Edith Cowan University (except for WA Academy of Performing Arts courses), Murdoch University and The University of Western Australia must apply through TISC. Applicants for WAAPA courses should apply directly to ECU but complete a TISC application if they wish to be considered for other ECU courses, and applicants for The University of Notre Dame Australia can choose whether to apply directly to the university, or through TISC.

Applicants for Notre Dame’s Young Achievers Early Offer Program can apply directly to the university. Applicants who select an eligible Notre Dame degree as their first preference may also be considered for an early offer via TISC. Please note, the Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Assured Pathway to Medicine) is not eligible for early entry, and all applications for this degree must be made via TISC.

EARLY OFFERS

Following the release of a report by the Federal Government, the five universities have agreed that early offers to Year 12 students for 2025 admissions will not be made until Monday 2 September 2024. Further rounds of early offers will be made on Tuesday 24 September, Monday14 October, Monday 18 November and Monday 2 December. Most early offers will be conditional, so students should carefully read their offer letter so that they know what is required. Students should also be aware that not all courses are available for early offers. Generally, courses with limited places, and university enabling programs do not make early offers, but for specific lists of courses excluded from early offers, check the university websites. Early offers will continue to be made based on final Year 11 results, as it is not feasible to use mid-year Year 12 results.

TISC GUIDE

The 2025 TISC Guide was handed out to all Year 12 students during the Homeroom period on Tuesday, 30 July.

How much will your degree cost?

Many students have no idea how much they are going to have to pay back once they finish their degree. UWA has a useful fee calculator tool students may use to estimate the cost of their units and degree overall.

A normal degree is worth 144 course credit points.
Each unit of study is worth 6 points.

You do 26 units all together (144/6 = 26)

(See Undergraduate course structure)

Each unit costs just over $1000

To do your own calculations:

  1. Go to the UWA Fees Calculator
  2. From the drop-down menu select Undergraduate
  3. Choose which course you would like to study.
  4. Scroll down to I want to price my units
  5. Select units you want to study.
  6. A table will come up showing how many points each unit is worth and how much it will cost.
  7. When you have chosen 48 points worth of units for the year it will calculate your total cost for the year as a full time student.

Schools Recommendation Program

The University of Tasmania’s Schools Recommendation Program is a program allowing Australian Year 12 students to apply for up to five courses and receive a conditional offer before the final results are released.

So, rather than an ATAR, the application is based on a student’s school recommendation and their Year 11 results. It has been designed to give students confidence in completing their Year 12 and receiving a university place in 2025.

Applications open 27 June 2024, and there are a number of application rounds, and applications can be submitted right up to 4 October 2024.

Note: students who apply by 29 July will be eligible for a main round offer in September.  Applicants will be notified of their success after UTAS has received the recommendation from their school.

Students are encouraged to browse UTAS School’s Recommendation Program to find out more.

Studying the Bachelor of Paramedicine at UTAS

The Bachelor of Paramedicine is offered as a two-year, full time (fast-track) program, at two of the University of Tasmania’s campuses, Hobart, Tasmania, and at its Rozelle Campus in Sydney, NSW.

Throughout the degree, students have the chance to learn skills in small groups, and then apply what they learn to professional experience placements within ambulance services.  The course is taught by qualified paramedics, both on UTAS staff and through the university’s connections with the local healthcare sector.   There is a low student/teacher ratio during the clinical practical experiences, which provides students with individual attention and support throughout their studies.

Graduates of course allows students to work in complex, dynamic and sometimes extreme environments.  Graduates will possess the expertise and values to have a positive impact on the quality of life for their community and will be equipped to work around the world.

Importantly, this course is accredited by the Paramedicine Board of Australia (the National Board), and graduates of the program can apply for registration as a paramedic with the National Board via the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) website.

The VCE entry requirement for standard entry is an ATAR in the region of 75.00.  Alternatively, non-Year 12 students who have completed a Diploma of Nursing (the approved program of study for enrolled nurses), or a Diploma of Paramedical Science, or a Diploma of Emergency Health Care, or a combined JMED and Diploma of Nursing (ADF) may be eligible to apply.

Find out more at Bachelor of Paramedicine at UTAS.

Veteran Family Pathway (VEP)

ACU is committed to supporting both veterans and their families accessing tertiary education.  The VEP – family pathway recognises the challenges military families may face as a result of service.

Often for the family members of ADF personnel there can be significant barriers when pursuing educational/employment goals due to service commitments such as posting cycles, deployments and/or locality.  This pathway aims to provide recognition of these challenges and sacrifices by giving the opportunity to access a range of study options, increasing employability and opening the door to meaningful employment.

This entry pathway is available to any partner, spouse, or child over the age of 18 of current/previous serving ADF personnel.

Getting into Medicine in WA

There is good reason to believe medical students are outstanding.

If you want to apply for medicine:

  • Take chemistry: Chemistry is a pre-requisite subject for medicine at most universities across Australia.

Entry to Medicine for 2025 (UCAT)

Only Curtin University in Western Australia takes students into medicine straight from school*. It was designed as a pathway for West Australian school leavers.

Candidates from rural and regional areas and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and those from disadvantaged backgrounds will be prioritised.

  • Rural and remote applicants: The Medicine Faculty at Curtin is keen to address the shortage of doctors in the bush in WA. Contact Associate Professor Keith McNaught - Rural Academic Lead, Curtin Medical School at Keith.Mcnaught@curtin.edu.au

There were over 3000 applicants for the 120 places being offered at Curtin in 2024.

  • Applicants must have an ATAR of 95 or higher, including Chemistry, with a final score of 50 or higher. (See P4 of the Admission Guide for details.)
  • A competitive score on the Universal Clinical Aptitude Test. Bookings for the Test open 5 March. Testing begins 1 July.
  • Applicants then take the Casper Test which was introduced by Curtin last year.

The 8 best study apps for students

Studying can be tough, but the right apps can make it way easier. There are loads of apps out there to help you take better notes, organise your study, and learn more effectively, and Study Work Grow has collected the best of the best just for you.

Here are 8 of the best study apps that can help you ace your classes and get the grades you need.

1. Evernote

Evernote is a super handy note-taking app. You can create, organise, and share notes across all your devices, which is great when you’ve got multiple study tools, You can also add text, images, audio recordings, and even scanned documents to your notes, making it easy to keep all your study materials in one place. Plus, it has a great search function, so you can quickly find what you need.

2. Zotero

Zotero is a lifesaver for managing citations and references, and can be used on your computer or phone. You can add books, articles, and websites to your personal library, and Zotero will automatically create citations and bibliographies in various styles, like APA, MLA, and Chicago. You can also add sources manually by scanning the barcode of a book or just entering the title (which sounds a bit like magic to us). The app can then create a bibliography, saving time and making sure your citations are up to the standard your teachers expect.

3. Brainscape

Brainscape is great for creating and studying flashcards. You can make your own flashcards or use any of the heaps they have in their database. The app also lets you take quizzes and track your progress, helping you see where you need to focus your study efforts.

4. Dragon Anywhere

Dragon Anywhere is a voice recognition app that turns speech into text. This can be super useful for taking notes quickly during lectures or recording your thoughts on the go. The app is also really accurate and can save you a lot of time compared to typing.

5. GoConqr

GoConqr offers a bunch of tools to help you study better. You can create mind maps, flashcards, quizzes, and notes that are all contained within the app. This app also lets you join study groups and share your resources with other students, making it a great way to study with friends.

6. Office Lens

Office Lens is a really cool app from Microsoft that basically turns your phone into a portable scanner. You can use it to take photos of whiteboards, documents, and notes, and the app will automatically make the images clear and readable. OfficeLens also works great with OneNote and other Microsoft Office apps, so you can easily organise your scanned documents.

7. My Study Life

My Study Life is perfect for managing your school schedule. It lets you store your class timetable, track homework assignments, and set reminders for exams and due dates. The app also syncs across all your devices, so you can check your schedule and tasks anywhere.

8. Quizlet

Quizlet is an awesome app for studying with flashcards and games. You can create your own flashcards or use sets made by other students, and it’s a really fun way to start remembering stuff. The app also has fun study modes like matching games and practice tests to help you learn in a more interactive way.

Ready to improve your study game?

Using the right study apps can make a huge difference in how well you learn and remember information. Whether you need help with taking notes, organising your schedule, or studying for tests, these apps have you covered.

GAP YEAR OPPORTUNITIES

5 ideas for a gap year on a budget

Want to travel overseas for your gap year, but a bit tight on money? Don’t let that stop you – there are plenty of ways you can finesse your way to a budget friendly gap year and make a ton of awesome memories at the same time.

Here are 5 ideas from Study Work Grow to get you started on a gap year that won’t break the bank.

1. Become a Trusted Housesitter

Calling all pet and travel lovers, Trusted Housesitters Worldwide is a platform that connects hometowners with pet sitters who can look after their pets and homes while they’re away.

There is a membership fee for the platform, but it’s only payable once annually and ensures only trustworthy sitters and pet parents can use the site. Plus, the fee factors in verification and support services from the site.

In exchange for your pet-sitting services, you get free accommodation, and Trusted Housesitters have destinations all over the world. If you want a gap year abroad, there’s no better way to do it than living like a local, experiencing new places, and enjoying the company of furry friends.

2. Gap year scholarships

If you’re looking for financial aid but still want to go overseas, you might be eligible for a gap year scholarship. There are organisations that offer programs for students with a gap year focus, with categories both needs-based and merit-based. Each organisation will have their own specifications, but we’ve collected some offering scholarships and grants for your gap year needs to get you started:

  • Baret Scholars (U.S) offers need- and merit-based financial aid for their 7 regions of the world exploration program.
  • Carpe Diem Education offer an Access scholarship and an Inclusion scholarship for their Carpe Diem gap year program.
  • CET offers $400,000 USD in scholarship awards each year for their study abroad programs in multiple countries.
  • International Field Studies Inc. offers a Forfar Marine Science Gap Year Program Scholarship for students whose annual household incomes do not exceed $100,000 USD.
  • Seguinland Institute has full and partial scholarships (up to $12,900 USD) available for BIPOC students for The Good Life Gap Semester.
  • Art History Abroad offers the Trenchard Cox Scholarship, which awards the recipient with one 2-week Summer Course in Italy. Next applications will be in 2025 (information forthcoming).
  • The Food Gap offers 3 scholarships each year for their art and food retreat programs in Italy.
  • The Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) provides scholarships and ongoing support to students with financial need who are underrepresented among the U.S. study-abroad population.

3. WWOOF

WWOOF stands for Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms. As a WWOOFer, you’ll work on organic farms in exchange for free food and accommodation all while learning organic farming practices, living with host families, and experiencing rural life in different countries.

WWOOF has hosts in over 130 countries, so you can choose from a wide variety of destinations. It’s a fantastic way to travel on a budget, learn new skills, and contribute to sustainable farming communities. If you’re interested in WWOOFing, check out our guide on WWOOFing your way around the world.

4. Work exchange

Work exchange is a similar concept to WWOOFing, but you’re not confined to just working on farms. You get free accomodation and meals in exchange for work. Popular organisations like Worldpackers and Workaway connect volunteers with hosts around the globe, making it easy to find a project that fits your interests and budget.

There are various types of work environments and tasks you can do for a work exchange. Here are a few of the most common options:

  • Hostels (common tasks include reception, housekeeping, bartending, night shift, surf coach, yoga teacher)
  • NGOs (common tasks include childcare, language practice, animal care, digital marketing)
  • Local families (common tasks include childcare, animal care, language practice, gardening, housekeeping)
  • Local businesses (common tasks include photography, social media, digital marketing, hospitality, web development)
  • Farms and eco-retreats (common tasks include gardening, farming, animal care, permaculture)

5. Backpacking

This one’s a classic for a reason. Backpacking is one of the most inexpensive ways to travel, by – you guessed it – bringing nothing but a backpack. By staying in hostels, cooking your own meals, and using budget-friendly transportation options, you can stretch your travel funds significantly.

Southeast Asia, Europe, and Central America are known for being budget-friendly backpacking destinations with a wealth of experiences to offer. Loads of backpackers also find temporary work along the way, such as fruit picking or hostel work, to earn extra cash and extend their travels.

SPOTLIGHT

LinkedIn for Year 12 students: creating a professional profile

These days, most of us probably look for work online. Whether it’s browsing a job database, asking in a Facebook group, or even just doing a quick Google search, there’s no doubt that the internet has certainly changed the way we search for jobs. So how can you make your online presence work in your favour, and actually help you find (and secure) a job?

That’s where professional social media sites like LinkedIn come in. LinkedIn is a social media site that focuses on jobs, career development, and even skill building. Using LinkedIn as a student can help you appeal to potential employers, network with your peers and mentors, and help build a name for yourself in the professional world.

Why do I need a LinkedIn profile as a student?

You might be thinking that this all sounds well and good, but I’m just in high school or my first year of uni – why do I need a professional profile?

Student or not, if you apply for a job, chances are your potential future employer will look you up online. And if they can’t find anything (or don’t like what they see), this might actually affect your chances of being hired.

Additionally, job seeking isn’t the only reason to have a LinkedIn profile. It’s also a great place to explore, network, connect with like-minded people, and even learn new things. Plus, it’s free, so why not give it a go?

One quick note – according to LinkedIn’s User Agreement, you need to be at least 16 years old to open an account.

LinkedIn profile basics

Ready to go ahead and make a LinkedIn account? Here are some tips to consider when creating your profile.

Use a personal email address

If you’re still studying, you probably have an email associated with your school or university. While it might be tempting to use this email, you should use a personal one instead – this way you will have access to your LinkedIn account long after you graduate. Don’t have a personal email account? Gmail is a free and easy option.

Add a profile picture

It’s always good to be able to put a face to a name, and LinkedIn is no different. People are more likely to respond (and it seems less spammy) if your profile includes a picture. But unlike Instagram or TikTok, there are a few things to keep in mind when picking the perfect LinkedIn profile pic:

  • It needs to be of you, of course! LinkedIn might remove your picture if it’s a cute snap of your dog, for example.
  • Wear something nice – like what you would wear to an interview or work.
  • Selfies aren’t totally off-limits, but it’s best to ask a friend to take the photo for you.
  • Make sure you get a good angle and nice lighting
  • There are some other useful tips to keep in mind in this video

About you

This is where a lot of students get tripped up when making a LinkedIn profile. If you haven’t had a job before or only have casual experience, what else are you supposed to add to fill out your profile?

While LinkedIn is a platform for jobs, it’s not the be-all and end-all – in fact, there are probably lots of things you’ve done and achieved throughout school and university that you can add to your profile, including:

  • Awards you’ve received or competitions you’ve won
  • Clubs you’ve been a part of (e.g. debating, chess, sports, robotics, etc.)
  • Unpaid or volunteer work you’ve done (e.g. working the canteen at the local sporting grounds, participating in advisory/advocacy groups, etc.)
  • Projects you’ve done or participated in (e.g. building a website, organising a charity drive for your school, etc.)
  • Your leadership roles (e.g. school captain, student body leader, etc.)
  • Your top skills and strengths
  • Your favourite/best classes or subjects
  • Short courses, workshops, or microcredentials you’ve done
  • Qualifications you already have (even things like First Aid)
  • Tools and programs you’re proficient with (e.g. Microsoft Word, using power tools, etc.)
  • Languages you know (whether you’re fully fluent or not)

There is also a section where you can add a little summary about yourself too. This could include things like your future goals and dreams, your hobbies and interests, things that inspire you, and even a bit about your journey so far. If you need a hand getting started, here are some examples of great LinkedIn profile summaries

Using LinkedIn – the basics

Once you’ve set up your profile, you can now start using the rest of the site’s features. There are quite a few and it might seem a bit intimidating at first, but here are the most useful:

Connections

Connections are just like friend requests, allowing you to connect with other LinkedIn users and see their posts and information. LinkedIn usually starts out by suggesting some connections for you based on the information you provide in your profile – people who went to your school/university, live in the same town, work in similar fields, etc.

Most of the time, we suggest only connecting with people you know personally. Some people might feel a bit awkward connecting with someone they don’t know; and conversely, you might also not want a stranger seeing your full profile.

But what if there’s someone you think is really cool and you want to know more about them? Well, there’s a solution for that…

Following

This feature works basically like any other social media. You can follow people, organisations, and even pages on specific topics, and their activity will show up on your feed. It’s a great way of expanding your network without needing to connect with people you don’t know.

You might not see all of someone’s information as a follower, but you can still read and interact with their posts.

Still not sure of the difference? Take a look at this quick video

Messaging

LinkedIn only allows you to send and receive messages to and from people you’re connected with. They do have another service (InMail) that allows you to message people you’re not connected with, but it’s part of their paid service.

If you don’t want people you don’t know to send you InMail, you can turn InMail requests off in your account settings

Your feed

Just like when you open Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok, the first thing you see on LinkedIn is your feed. You’ll see things like posts from your network (connections and follows), trending and recommended content, and sponsored content.

How should I use LinkedIn as a student?

Here are some things you can do as a student on LinkedIn to grow your network and find jobs.

Follow lots of people and pages

Try and follow a variety of people from all walks of life, not just people from your local area or your friends from school. This can help you gain a better understanding of work and careers all around the world and listen to different perspectives and opinions.

Browse the page of your future university or company you’d like to work for and learn more about their impact, see courses and jobs on offer, and find affiliated people to connect with or follow.

Interact with people

You can leave reactions and comments on people’s posts on LinkedIn. Engaging with someone’s post, particularly by leaving relevant and friendly comments, can be a great way to start a conversation, and may even lead to further connection down the track.

Do lots of searching

Use the search bar to browse to your heart’s content. Search for a topic that interests you and see what’s out there – see what people in that field are doing, read and watch articles and videos about the topic, and find groups to join based on your interests.

Find jobs

LinkedIn has an entire section dedicated to finding and applying for jobs. You can use it to search for listings, get help and advice on resume and skill building, and even ask your connections to endorse your skills.

Keep your profile updated

Don’t forget to take some time every now and then to make sure your profile details are all still current. Add news jobs, skills, and experiences; share your own posts and insights with your network; or if you’ve had a major appearance change, upload a new profile picture.

Stay professional

While it is technically social media, remember that LinkedIn is a professional platform – so it’s probably not the place to be sharing your holiday pics or details of last night’s date. When engaging with others, remember to keep your language polite and formal, even if it’s someone you know in real life.
