Specialist Classes

STEM

In STEM we are continuing to work in the area of Earth and Space Sciences and this week saw the senior students explore the sizes of the Earth, Sun and Moon using just a tennis ball, basketball and themselves.  The experiment required the students to arrange themselves in groups of three and then allocate roles to each member of the group (one person became the Moon holding the tennis ball, one the Sun holding the basketball and the remaining member the Earth). The Earth was to stand in front of the Moon and the Sun and then direct the sun to move backwards until it appeared to be the same size as the moon. Each person swapped roles so they could all experience being the Earth. It was very interesting to compare the results and discuss how everyone's perception can be so different!!!! And it was also a great way to compare and contrast the size of the Earth, Sun and Moon with something as simple as a few balls!!!!

ITALIAN

In Italian students are beginning to explore Christmas in Italy. F-2 students have learnt about La Befana being the good witch who delivers small gifts and sweets to children. Often these gifts are put in stockings or shoes on the eve of the epiphany, January 5th.

Gr 3-6 students have begun creating and printing a google slide featuring some facts about Christmas in Italy, focusing on foods, decorations and family events.

SPORT

We began playing Tee Ball last week and the students are excited to give this new sport a go. They have been using our hand-eye coordination when hitting the ball and while fielding. The senior students have been learning about the different positions and the importance of being explosive when running between the wickets.

We have been very fortunate to have Micheal visiting on Tuesday to teach us how to play Pickleball. The students have been adapting their coordination to this new sport and I have seen a lot of great skills!

Both of the 3/4 Summer Sports and 5/6 Summer Sport have been on in the last 2 weeks. The 3/4 loved going over to Tongala Primary to play games with schools in the area. ‘Hot hits’ was a favourite of many of the students. A special mention to James Wickham, Francis and Liam for showing great sportsmanship throughout the day. The 5/6 Summer Sports was held in Kyabram and the students had to be resilient on the 38 degree day. They all put in a great effort and enjoyed having a run in the sprinklers at the end of the day. Special mention to Caleb for his positive attitude and high energy in the heat.

ART

Lots of messy fun in the art room lately nearing the end of our modelling and clay work units!

It’s been amazing to watch the students push through challenges and problem solve when creating their clay pieces. All students have learnt so many new skills and techniques but have also recognised the benefits that playing with clay or dough and using our hands benefits our mind and wellbeing.

We love using clay!!
