On Thursday 7th November, students in Year 1/2 went to the Maritime Museum. We travelled to the excursion on a bus, which was very fun. When we arrived at the Museum we played some games on the grass. Inside the Museum it was full of interesting things. Our favourite things to look at were the model of the ship that could carry cars and caravans, Trim the cat who lived on a row boat and the boat simulator.
Outside the museum, we had a visit from a Padre (Chaplain) from the Royal Australia Navy. The Padre taught us how to salute and how to march in the Navy.
We walked to the cenotaph and the Padre told us about the war. We gave thanks for people who had fought in the wars and we prayed for people who serve in the ADF today and for their families.
In the afternoon, we went to the Bluff. We played on the playground and we had pizza. It was an amazing, brilliant and fun excursion.
Student reflections:
I liked driving the boat – Abbygail
My favourite part was going to the park – Emily M
I liked that we got pizza from Dominoes – Hudson A
I liked having the pizza and talking about the Navy – Josiah
I liked the Maritime museum and playing the boat game and playing at the bluff playground - Maple
On Friday 8th November, six students from Year 5/6 along with Mrs Groenewold and Mr Overton, went to compete in the 2024 Reader’s Cup Challenge. The event was held at Devonport Primary School and a number of schools in the Devonport area had teams represent them. The day consisted of a number of quizzes and a Creative Challenge. The quizzes were centred around fiction texts that were pre-selected for the event and all students read each text prior to the day in order to answer the quiz questions. The DCS team’s Creative Challenge was a drama performance – written and directed by the students – retelling main events from one of the stories. Students represented DCS well and had fun participating in the 2024 Reader's Cup Challenge.
Student Reflections:
The questions were not as hard as I thought and it was a fun day. We tried our best with the Creative Challenge, but we could have done better with the rehearsals. Ruby E
Reader’s Cup was fun because we enjoyed doing a challenge together as a team. Safwana
I enjoyed Reader’s Cup a lot and making the props for the Creative Challenge. For our Creative Challenge we did a play which was based on the story 'Huda Was Here' by H. Hayek. I loved doing the quiz because I could remembered information from the book to answer the questions. We also got to play in another school’s playground. After the Cup we went to Maccas and got an ice-cream.

An exciting opportunity arose today for our choir students in Years 1-6 to shine their light to the Devonport community where, following on from successful performances in previous years, our students were again asked to sing at the Wishing Tree Launch at Devonport Kmart. For 37 years, The Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal has helped assist families and people in need in our communities at Christmas and beyond. Thank you Kmart for hosting us and blessing our students.
As a school we are excited to welcome all families to our Primary Assemblies each Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
We wish to advise that there will be no assembly on Wednesday 27th November.
Thank you.
Friday 22nd November will be the last day for students to borrow library books. Please note that students will be able to borrow for one week only.
At the end of each year, to assist with all books being returned, I offer to students in Years 1-6 that whichever class returns ALL their books they will all receive a chocolate!
I encourage students and families to please start checking bookshelves at home and return any books to the school library. Thank you!

School will be closed on Friday 29th November for the Devonport Show public holiday.
Enjoy your long weekend!
Each week at our Friday assembly we love to celebrate our students. We would love to hear from you if your child has achieved something significant over the weekend during sporting events, dancing, baptisms, theatre, music achievements etc.
