Primary School News

Mr Michael Connolly, Head of Primary School

Dear Primary Parents,

Whilst on my recent leave, I was fortunate to spend some time in the French city of Lyon. Famous for its world heritage sites, silk industry and gastronomy, Lyon is also home to the beautiful Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourviere which stands high on the hill, overlooking the city of Lyon. This basilica represents a very important chapter in our Marist story.

For those unfamiliar with the story, Saint Marcellin Champagnat, made a significant pledge at Fourvière that marked a turning point in his mission and devotion. This event took place on July 23, 1816, at the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière. At that time, Marcellin was a newly ordained priest, just 27 years old, and had gathered with a small group of like-minded seminarians who shared his vision and commitment to the Virgin Mary.

The group included other founders of what would become the Marist Fathers (Society of Mary), including Jean-Claude Colin, and together they sought to dedicate their lives to the Virgin Mary. Their goal was to create a religious society that would embody Mary's humility, simplicity, and sense of service, spreading faith and education to rural and underserved communities.

At Fourvière, in front of the altar, the group took a solemn vow to establish the Society of Mary (the Marist family), pledging their lives to the mission and to placing their work under Mary's guidance. Marcellin's particular focus was on education and the formation of young people, especially those in need who lacked access to quality schooling. His experiences growing up and witnessing the ignorance and lack of faith in his rural hometown inspired his conviction. Following the pledge at Fourvière, Marcellin's devotion and determination grew, and he went on to found the Marist Brothers (or the Little Brothers of Mary) in 1817.

To sit and contemplate in the very Chapel where Saint Marcellin and his group sat all those years ago was a very powerful experience and it provided an opportunity to reflect on our work here at Marist College Ashgrove with the boys and families in our Primary School. I doubted if Marcellin could ever have imagined how important his visit to the basilica that day would prove to be. I am sure he would be amazed at our beautiful St Marcellin Centre and the results being achieved in it by our hard-working students and teachers.  Just as Marcellin did, we all have to make a commitment to help our boys achieve their best and make their remaining time here in the Primary School a successful and fulfilling experience.

Have a wonderful Week 7.

Primary Pastoral Leader – Anthony Graham

Last Friday, our Year 5 and Year 6 students had the wonderful opportunity to visit Stuartholme College, strengthening the connections between our schools and fostering valuable friendships. The day was filled with team-building activities that encouraged collaboration, communication, and mutual respect among students from both schools. It was particularly special to come together and share a meal, allowing students to bond over conversations and laughter. These experiences not only enrich their social skills but also provide memories that extend beyond the classroom. We look forward to continuing these partnerships that align with our commitment to nurturing community and inclusivity.

No Handball Fridays

To support a balanced and harmonious playground experience, we recently introduced “No Handball Fridays,” where students are encouraged to explore other activities beyond handball. This initiative has been well-received, as it allows students to engage in a variety of sports and games, fostering different skills and social interactions. As handball is often linked to playground incidents, giving it a break on Fridays has positively impacted the atmosphere during breaks, encouraging boys to discover new interests and enjoy activities in a supportive, respectful environment.

Fun Day Permission Slips for Year 5 and Year 6

Excitement is building as we approach the Year 5 and Year 6 Fun Days on Thursday, 28 November. Permission slips have been sent home, and we’re thrilled to offer these memorable experiences to mark the end of the school year.

Year 6 Trip to Wet’n’Wild

Year 6 students will spend the day at Wet’n’Wild, enjoying a well-deserved celebration of their achievements. This adventure-filled outing will allow them to have fun and bond with friends as they make lasting memories.

Year 5 Fun Day at the College

Our Year 5 students will have a fun-filled day on campus with a lineup of engaging activities. From pool games and a special movie screening to outdoor sports, the day promises to be an enjoyable mix of relaxation and excitement.

We’ve spoken with the boys about the importance of maintaining respectful behaviour both in and out of the classroom as we approach these events. These Fun Days are a privilege and a special gift, which means students are expected to uphold the values of Marist College Ashgrove throughout the remainder of the term. Boys have been informed about a “three strikes” policy: should a student reach three behaviour-related incidents, parents will be notified, and he may forfeit the opportunity to attend the Fun Day. While we anticipate that all students will maintain their eligibility, this reminder reinforces the importance of personal responsibility and representing Marist with pride.
