On Wednesday, 6th November, a number of Year 8 students had a fantastic time at Aspendale Beach for our first ever Water Safety Day. The day was packed with valuable lessons in water safety and beach awareness, all while giving students a chance to enjoy the sun and sand. It was a very warm 31 degrees! An important part of the Victorian Curriculum is for students to experience aquatic and water-based settings, so this gave students an opportunity to experience this.
Throughout the day, students participated in a range of activities designed to equip them with essential water safety skills. Paddle boarding was a favourite, where students practiced balance and manoeuvring techniques. They also learned water rescue techniques, focusing on how to safely assist others in an emergency in open water. The session on CPR knowledge was particularly important, giving students a chance to learn and practice this vital lifesaving skill.
Understanding beach safety signs was another key component of the day. Students were taught how to read signs commonly found on Australian beaches, helping them recognize safe swimming zones and avoid potential hazards such as rips.
In addition to the safety-focused activities, students enjoyed a range of beach games, including spikeball, volleyball, and soccer. The games provided a fun and relaxed atmosphere for everyone to unwind and bond with classmates, rounding off a day of both learning and laughter.
Overall, our Year 8 Water Safety Day was a great success, combining education and enjoyment in a way that will help keep our students safe in and around the water. A big thank you to our teachers, and the fantastic instructors from Life Saving Victoria for making this day possible.
