The Careers in Pathways in Sport trip to the USA provided students with an opportunity to explore diverse careers within the sports industry, offering hands-on learning and exposure to elite sports organizations in Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. This experience aligned with the Department's focus on career education, helping students gain insights into sports-related professions such as coaching, sports administration, sports science, physiotherapy, marketing, and more. Through specialized learning modules, students connected STEM concepts to sports careers, covering areas like sports psychology, technology, performance, leadership, and diversity.
Key learning outcomes included the development of professional skills, career insights, and the identification of scholarship opportunities for aspiring athletes. Students engaged with industry professionals from organizations such as the NHL, NBA, and NFL, attending events like NBA and NFL games, where they observed sports management, event operations, and marketing firsthand. They also visited universities like UC Berkeley, Stanford, and the University of Oregon, interacting with experts in sports business, marketing, and coaching.
The trip also highlighted the importance of transferable skills, networking, and career resilience. Students received tailored guidance on job searching, personal branding, and leveraging their athletic experience for future career success. The collaborative nature of the trip, involving students from three different schools, helped foster connections and build a network of peers and mentors. Ultimately, the experience bridged the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, providing students with valuable insights into various career pathways in the sports industry.
