Maths

with Mr Jellie

While our future Preps have been excitedly learning about and experiencing everything that is Langwarrin PS, our current Prep classes have been taking it in turns to play with our schools Nudel Kart.

The Nudel Kart is a creative play activity, where our students learn to work collaboratively to design and create anything they can put their minds to.  Some of our Prep creations include a Ghostbusters car, boats, trucks, houses, lakes, jails and castles.

SpaceX

In an exciting time for space exploration, a number of our classes explored the science and mathematics behind Mechazilla catching the SpaceX Booster Rocket on its return to Earth.  The students explored Newton’s Laws of Motion, Force = Mass x Acceleration (F=MA) to develop a basic understanding of the immense forces involved in catching a 100 tonne rocket.

Using calculators, the students acted as ‘super computers’, quickly calculating the different forces as the rocket returned to prepare Mechazilla for the catch.

Students also explored some of the extreme speeds involved in putting satellites into orbit.  To maintain orbit, satellites need to be traveling approximately 27800 km/h and most are between 200 – 2000 kilometres above the Earth’s surface.
