Reading

In reading, the grade 3/4s have been exploring text features. We have looked at different texts and identified features such as the contents page, photographs, captions, labels and subtitles.

We have also been learning about narrative texts. We have discussed and explored different genres of narratives such as mysteries, fairy tales, spooky stories and science fiction.

3/4A class visited the 1/2 space. The 1/2's read their illustrated and published narratives to the 3/4's who listened and gave positive feedback.

In writing, grade 3/4s have completed the publishing of their persuasive texts by typing them on their laptops. Students have also started to prepare for the next text type we will be working on: narratives. We have discussed different genres and brainstormed characters, settings and vocabulary associated with each genre. We have also used our descriptive language skills to write paragraphs describing characters and settings.

In maths, the grade 3/4s have started to learn about tenths represented as decimals. We have explored how tenths are smaller than one whole. Students have matched and compared numbers represented as decimals, fractions, words and pictures.

We have also learnt about data representation. We have collected data within our classes using tally marks and then represented the data on picture graphs and bar graphs.

Inquiry/SEL

This week the grade 3/4s honoured Remembrance Day. We learnt about the sacrifices made by soldiers who have served and are still serving in wars around the world and we recognised how grateful we are to live in such a wonderful, safe country.

In inquiry, students have continued to build on their understanding of African and South American cultures. A highlight this week has definitely been using coloured paper to create paper weaving mats.
