Year 10 Wood Tech - Chess side table

Year 10 Wood Technology students were asked to redesign a bedside table, George K. innovatively came up with the 'chess side table'...

I first had an idea of making a chess-themed bedside table with built-in unfoldable chairs and a chess board built into the tabletop. But after thinking through the idea more thoroughly with the limitations in mind. For the time being, I had to set it aside. Instead, I optimised another idea, I planned and built a similar table, but with a different gimmick. The bedside table or, as I nicknamed it 'chess side table', would have the same chess top, rounded latched legs for aesthetic reasons and a draw that doubles as a foldable portable chess board with a felted inside. In addition to the 'chess side table', I spent two months meticulously carving, polishing and perfecting a chess set to go along with the table. I used mountain ash for the white pieces and jarrah for the dark pieces. The size of the chess piece is just right to fit the tables and two boards and in addition, they are the right size to fit an average chess set.

Amazing job George!

Year 9 Italian 'Il Mercato Centrale' and Lygon St Carlton Excursion - Tuesday 12th November

Il Mercato Centrale – 546 Collins St Melbourne (Italian food market – 3 levels)

Pros:

  • Fun experience.
  • Well spaced out and set up.
  • The ambience was relaxing.
  • Authentic Italian food.
  • Great bread.
  • I recommend the Sicilian cannoli.
  • The chocolate cannolo is the best thing I’ve ever had, hands down. Rich in flavour, crunchy and sweet.
  • The pizza slice was very flavourful! The roasted pumpkin and caramelized onions were the best bit.
  • The chai latte was so good! The spices are strong, but not overwhelming, and the milk softens everything just right.
  • Great for all seafood lovers.

Cons:

  • Cashless.
  • Expensive.
  • Not all of the stalls were open.
  • No dietary warnings for people.

Brunetti Classico Carlton – 380 Lygon St Carlton

  • Gorgeous exterior and interior.
  • Food was amazing!
  • So many different food options for everyone. Prices were good as well.
  • The cakes looked so good.
  • Rich tasting desserts.
  • It was fun practising my Italian when ordering food.

Lygon St

  • The streets were nice and not overcrowded.
  • There were various kinds of shops to keep you entertained: makeup stores, Italian pizzeria, little boutiques...
  • Authentic, with many different Italian stores.
