Teaching and Learning

Room 9

This term, room nine has been focusing on persuasive texts. For their final writing piece, they are persuading Miss Alannah what homework they would like to have next term.

We discussed backing up our opinion with facts and statistics.

Here are some of our examples:

Lexi T: I definitely want to bake with my parents once a week because it’s fun. Kidshealth.com says baking is great for kids because it teaches them maths and measurement skills such as capacity and mass.

Jesse: I believe that Minecraft education should be our homework because it’s based on the original game, but it has different features and teaches you new STEM skills. EducationMinecraft.net says “Minecraft education builds STEM skills, unleashes creativity and engages students.”

Nano: I strongly believe we should have Gimkit for homework because it’s a fun way to complete activities set by the teacher in maths, writing and spelling. Keith says “The game is SO engaging for students once they understand how upgrades and powerups work. This is what makes students want to continue playing the game. Because questions are on a continuous loop, this allows for lots of repetitions”.

こんにちは,

Konnichiwa

Did you know that Rm 7 and 8 have been learning the Japanese vocabulary and grammar used in the well know story ‘Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See?’

They have learnt the vocabulary for animals, colours and verbs, as well as how to put them together in a sentence.

After focussing on both reading and translating, they have now been able to put it together to read the whole story! Scan the QR codes below to watch them in action. This is only their third attempt at reading it as a class. They have both done a great job!!!

Science News

The Year 6/7s have been learning about hydraulics. They researched a range of different machines that use hydraulics to operate then chose one to create a model of. They had to draw labelled diagrams of their machine and then plan what materials they would require to build it. They have only just started the building process and their machines are already looking fantastic. This is a great way for them to experience the Engineering Design Process in a practical way. Our budding engineers are doing a fabulous job!

PE News

It has been another busy fortnight at WBPS in the PE and Sport Department… I hope I haven’t forgot anything.

Henley High School Hockey Academy

Rooms 7,8,9,10 and 12 have begun a 4-week hockey program at the Adelaide University, West Beach Hockey Fields. Coaches from the Henley HS Hockey Program are delivering sessions to improve confidence, skills and game understanding. It’s a fantastic initiative and great to see high school students coaching and connecting with primary school students through sport.

State wide School Competition- Boys Soccer

The boys started the day with flare, excitement and energy as they defeated both opposition teams, Hendon PS 5-1 and Fulham Gardens PS 5-1. Erophy and Caras were putting on a clinic in the striker line which had the crowd buzzing. A combination of Kohta in goals, Zane and Lachie in defence were solid as a rock at the back, and the Nic and Tyson combination in midfield had the team coming into the final game with confidence. The entire team was playing some champagne soccer.

WBPS were up against St Francis in the final-match, the winning team would progress to the next round. The boys showed spirit, comradery and courage in a tough match, as they went down to a team that was simply better on the day. A great effort boys! well done!

State wide School Competition- Boys Footy

Can anyone stop Coach Reid and the boys as they continue their undefeated run which started back in 2020. Last year West Beach PS were the premiers of the state wide football competition and they will be marching on in to the next round of 2021 with 3 wins at the Greenacre Football Club. Hendon, Kersbrook/ Darlington and Dernancourt simply could not match it with the talented bunch of young footballers. Keep up the good work boys and good luck in the next round!

State wide School Competition- Girls Netball

From all accounts the team was unstoppable, winning both games against Flinders Park and Fulham Gardens quite comfortably. Led by Coach Bahnisch the girls played a well- structured and competitive brand of netball. “Fast, skilful and professional” was how Coach Bahnisch described his team on the day. The team will continue their vigorous training regime in preparation to the next round. Great work team!

Girls Crows Optus Cup Footy

To summarise the day, the girls were incredible. With only a few who have experienced Footy before, they were able to use their sporting skills and experiences to adapt to Football and improve every single game. They were fierce in tackles and exciting to watch all over the field.

Lara Scutchings had moments of brilliance with her ability to find the ball for centre clearances and the occasional sausage roll (goal), Chelsea was a tackling machine, Lillyana was an absolute star in all areas of the pitch and Hannah Drewer was like a brick wall in defence. Overall, the girls finished 6th out of 20 schools competing, well done!

SAPSASA Footy

Congratulation and Goodluck to Mr Reid (Super Coach), Archie (Year 7), Zane and Lachie (Year 6’s) who will be competing in the SAPSASA Football Competition next week. These four superstars will be representing the Airport District in a highly competitive carnival next week.

Cross Country State Championships- Oakbank

A huge congratulations go out to:

Lara Scutchings 11-year old Girl: finishing12th

Max Scutchings 13-year old Boy: finishing 13th

Running 3km is not easy, it shows resilience to push through the pain and persistence in preparation training. To run 3km and to finish top 15 in the state a massive achievement. Well done Scutchings, keep up the good work!

Baseball National Championships

A special mention to Kohta Beerworth, one of our many talented student athletes at WBPS. Kohta has recently competed at the under 13 National Championships held in Queensland. A fantastic achievement being selected to represent South Australia, well done Kohta!

Once again, thank you to our incredibly supportive staff and parents who put in so much time and effort providing fantastic opportunities for our students.
