VINNIES FAMILY SLEEPOUT

We had a number of members from our community that participated in the Vinnies Family Sleepout on Friday 30 July advocating for the Homeless. Sitting outside in the cold for a period of time definitely allows you to draw empathy and compassion for the homeless and disadvantaged.

“I could never imagine sleeping outside every night. It was crazy how I could barely even stand a couple of hours because of how cold it was. It really helped put things into perspective.” Elora Guirguis, Year 10.

FAMILY WEEK

Catholic schools across Australia will celebrate Family Week from 8 – 14 August, to recognise our parents, carers and families and their significant contribution to the foundation, growth and continuity of Catholic schools in Australia over 200 years.

Family Week coincides with the Feast Day of Australia’s First Saint, Mary MacKillop, who was a passionate educator and advocate for children and families, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Over 200 years, Catholic schools have educated millions of young people and today

educate one in five Australian students. More information on Family Week is available here.

SAINT MARY OF THE CROSS MACKILLOP

St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, our first Australian Saint, was born in Fitzroy, Melbourne in 1842. She died on 8 August 1909.

This date has become her Feast Day. She was canonized on 17 October 2010. Her example of faithfulness, kindness and down-to-earth living of the Gospel continue to inspire generations of people from all walks of life.

Although she faced difficulties far bigger and more frequently than most people, she was always able to keep things in perspective. She never gave up and knew deep in her heart that eventually God would sort things out and justice would prevail.

One of her sayings of reassurance was: “Do what you can and leave the rest to God”.

PRAYER FOR SAINT MARY OF THE CROSS MACKILLOP

God of justice and mercy, Your love is everlasting, your providence never ending.

Through the life of Mary MacKillop, inspire us to do all we can to help others grow into their potential.

Help us to follow her example and look for ways that we can help others.

May we be people of action, people of generosity and people of kindness willing to reach out to those who need our care and support.

Through the Spirit of grace and Jesus our brother, Amen.
