Junior School Report

The Junior School team hopes that all members of the community are travelling well with the recent announcement of a lockdown and subsequently a return to remote learning. We understand that this is far from ideal, however we will endeavour to work with everyone to ensure that the highest level of learning can occur. Due to this being our fifth lockdown, we have now all become experts at adapting to the sudden changes in our environment, and we wish to acknowledge our students and teachers who have once again transitioned seamlessly to online learning.

We encourage all students to continue to practise good habits such as staying organised, keeping active by taking short exercise breaks, and remaining connected with their peers and teachers by attending WebEx classes and participating online.

Virtual visit to KIOSC

In the June snap lockdown last month, the Year 7 students had a virtual visit to KIOSC. The purpose of this visit was to learn about space and the planet Mars.

The first activity involved learning about the time it would take to travel to the moon, and then onto Mars. This allowed us to understand how long it takes to travel in space, and the subsequent physical effects space travel can have on a human’s mental and physical health.

We then had an opportunity to use a program called ‘Scratch’ and develop a game which allowed us to move a rover around the screen, and collect water and rock samples that were on the surface of Mars. This activity allowed us to develop an interactive and engaging game and learn more about the planet Mars.

I really enjoyed this online session with KIOSC. It was very informative and interesting whilst being fun at the same time.

Upcoming Event for Year 8 English – Scoresby Symposium

The UN Declaration on the Rights of the Child emphasises the right for children to say what they think should happen when adults are making decisions that affect them and to have their opinions considered. This Convention also encourages adults to listen to the opinions of children and involve them in decision-making.

To ensure that our students’ voices are heard, Scoresby Secondary College is hosting our annual symposium. The original date was scheduled to take place on the Tuesday 27 July; however due to the recent lockdown it is currently being rescheduled.

During this event, our students will outline how they think we can ensure that Knox is a community which thrives. The prompt that our students are responding to is ‘How can we ensure that our people and our environment are safe, supported and have every opportunity to thrive?’

They will present their views in the form of political campaigns, complete with slogans, speeches, posters and other persuasive mediums, aimed at convincing the community to adopt their informed views.

Year 8 Parents / Carers are invited to join us on the day to hear and see the fantastic ideas that the students have come up with. Please see Compass for more information.

We look forward to sharing with you the highlights of the event in an upcoming newsletter edition.

Upcoming event- Night of the Notables

The Night of the Notables is a Year 9 project that involves the research of a famous person from history or the present. Students spend several weeks researching and learning about the famous notable in order to bring them to life in front of an audience consisting of parents / guardians, teachers and the school community.

I have chosen to investigate the Roman Emperor Trajan, one of the five great Emperors of Rome and a leader that I find quite interesting. I have enjoyed the Night of the Notables research task as it has been fun and educational all at the same time. I have learned a lot about how much Trajan did for the good of the people of Rome, not just making it better for the rich but also taking care of the poor and unfortunate people of Rome. Following our research and work within the classroom, we will be required to share our learning with others through information displays, answering questions, and hopefully introducing the audience to some new historical figures. I am looking forward to the night because it will be fun to share the research, and I hope we get to visit each other’s information booths so we can learn about everyone’s Notable figure, not just our own.
