Senior School Report

With the return to flexible and remote learning from home, it is important for students to do the following to maximise their outcomes and well-being:

  • Complete the daily school attendance check-in
  • Attend their set Webex lessons
  • Contact co-ordinators and teachers when necessary to answer queries and seek support
  • Maintain a study routine that ensures subjects are kept up to date
  • Follow their daily school timetable
  • Ensure a comfortable study area that is free from distractions and that can be monitored by parents / carers
  • Ensure phones and other digital devices are only used for learning activities and aren’t available as a distraction at other times
  • Ensure they take breaks and maintain physical exercise and connections to family and friends
  • Ensure they receive adequate sleep- Studies have shown that sleep is a major contributor to a student’s resilience
  • Time spent on homework and revision outside of school hours is still expected to be fully up to date with studies and be prepared for assessment tasks.

Year 12 ‘Residential’ Program- Day 2

Due to the Year 12 Residential not being able to proceed at the beginning of the school year, the college conducted a two-day program throughout the year- the first day at the beginning of Semester One and the second day at the beginning of Semester Two. The second and last day of the program for VCE students was held on Monday 12 July (first day of Term 3) at Ormond College, University of Melbourne.

The students participated in sessions including,  how to maintain motivation and health in the second half of the year, how to work effectively as a community leading up to the exams, and understanding the ATAR and how to maximise results. Thank you to Headspace and Mr. Roy Canil  for being our guest presenters. A review of the day from students will be provided in the next college newsletter.

For Day 2 of the program, the Year 12 VCAL students attended the METEC Driver Training Program on Thursday 15 July where they received practical driver training from driving instructors on METEC's non-public road course and the students also completed a theory driver safety education program. This program started one of the VCAL students’ major units for Semester Two focusing on driving and road safety. Student reviews of the day will be provided in the next college newsletter.

Year 10 Virtual Work Experience

The Semester One Year 10 Work Experience week was postponed to later in the year due to the Covid lockdown interruption towards the end of Term 2. In the last week of the term, the students finished their Semester One exams and participated in a virtual work experience program during the last three days of Term 2.

A huge thank you to our Careers and Pathways Co-ordinator, Ms Haines, for organising and leading the virtual work experience program. We look forward to the Year 10 students participating in successful and safe work experience placements later in the school year.

Following are two student reviews of the virtual work experience program:

Experiencing work experience online was a unique unexpected experience to encounter which occurred for the safety of others due to the pandemic happening. Our school provided us with a number of resources to help us determine what we want to achieve and do in the future as a career. Our decisions may not be final as yet, but virtual work experience aided us to investigate what we have a passion for in the future. I chose Nursing to complete my virtual work experience. The program provided me a wider point of view about working in the medical field as a nurse or health practitioner. It made me become more interested in the field and wanted to know more. I would like to thank the school for organising this and giving us this worthwhile experience.

Eryl Diesta, Year 10

As a collective, I think the virtual work experience program taught us the basic skills and knowledge required to enter the workforce, along with some extra skills based on the career of our choosing. I chose to do my virtual work experience in the area of Psychology, which taught me about some of the techniques used in counselling and important terms you might come across while working in the field. I think the virtual work experience was beneficial to everyone involved.

Year 12 Psychology Excursion to KIOSC

On Thursday July 15 the year 12 Psychology students visited KIOSC where they had the opportunity to hear from Julie who works at the Epworth Sleep laboratory.

Students were able to apply their knowledge of sleep as an altered state of consciousness while observing the changes in the physiological measures when a person is asleep.

Julie spoke to the students about sleep disorders and provided real video examples that she has seen within the sleep clinic. She also discussed sleep interventions and provided the students with an opportunity to wear glasses that block blue light to assist with sleeping, and those that emit a green light to assist with wakefulness. Students experienced what it would feel like to have to wear a sleep apnoea mask to bed each night and learnt how to apply electrodes to a person for an EEG, EMG and an EOG.

Here are some of the student reflections:

On Thursday the year 12 psychology class was very fortunate to head on over to KIOSC to participate in a sleep lab clinic to assist and further our current study in the classroom. It was highly beneficial to see the theory of our learning be explained and demonstrated in a clinical setting by a sleep technician.

Aimee Bugeja Year 11

This KIOSC excursion was fantastic! Having Julie (the guest speaker) come in and show us what she does for her job was incredible and informative. Seeing the brain waves in real time and learning how to read them was really enlightening. We also got to learn about sleep disorders. It was an amazing day and incredibly insightful.
