As part of their unit of work in the Geography: Interconnections unit of work, Year 9 students were tasked with creating their own livable city using the app TheoTown on their iPads. They then used their city to help them write an analysis on livable cities.
The cities that were built needed to be constructed using the livability criteria that they had learned about in class, as well as using the seven geographic concepts (or SPICESS) to meet the Geographical demands of the task.
Year 9 student work during this unit was very enthusiastic and of high quality. It was clear that students enjoyed being able to apply their learning in a practical environment.
Two of our final submissions have been included in the newsletter to show you some of the high standard work occurring in Year 9: Liz Hak of 9C who created Larren City and Emily Nguyen of 9F who created Essentials City.

Name Of City: Essentials City
1.What perceptions do the people of your city have of their home? The perceptions the resident have in Essentials City will have different affects on people with different ages. At Essentials City we provide services such as hospitals, police, fire brigades, schools and churches. There are also a lot of green spaces such as parks for the elderly or competitive sport grounds for athletes and young people. This means that the needs of people of Essentials have easy access to whatever they need, so therefore the City was named Essentials City as they provide residents with their essentials.
2.What will draw tourism to your town and impact what impacts will this have on: A)The Residents B)The Physical Spaces Essentials City has a Museum and The Karlsruhe Palace, making it one of the biggest tourist destination as there are now only two in the World, one in Germany and now one in Essentials City. This will bring tourism dollars to the area as people will crowd Essentials City and spend money on the local commercials and hotels. But this may also impact the environment by creating too much waste and making too much noise, therefore taxes will be higher as there is only one landfill. The noise levels will then cause complaints and riots to form on roads and neighborhoods, causing more trouble in Essentials City, giving the city a bad name. Added a pool for higher sports rating. Added a water filter for a better environment ratings Added a waste incinerator, to burn unnecessary rubbish instead of throwing it into landfills
3.How are people in your town connected to other towns through trading of good apps and services? creative in this answer! In Essentials City, we have all sorts of education and jobs. But the thing that makes the City special, is that most of the provided education and employment are not available in most Towns or Countries. Therefore thousands of people come here to find a job or to study for their future career. Essentials also offers surrounding towns with the manufacturing masks for the current Pandemic COVID-19. People contact Essentials as well as travel here to get the best quality masks.
4.Evaluate the future implications on the population of your town based on what you have created In the future, Essentials City’s population will increase and therefore the city will need constant renovations to make it livable. The city will also need to change there fast country roads into express roads and highways to prevent clutter in streets. However there is currently not enough waste management stations and as the population increases, the City will be full with rubbish. There are currently 3000+ people living in Essentials city and so over the years, changes such as adding more green space and nursing homes will be the most important thing to do for the elderly.

The perceptions that the residents of Larren City have is based off the community’s happiness as a whole. Larren City has lots of residential space. This has easy access to nearby police stations, fire stations and hospitals, as well as many other services. The reason why nearly every resident plot has nearby access is to ensure that the amount of people dying from problems and disasters is reduced, this also ensures that there is an increase on an optimistic community. The landfill is located a decent distance from the resident plots to avoid pollution and people migrating to other towns. There could also be an improvement to public transport across the city, more tourism sites and more advanced education systems. Overall, the Larren City is satisfied with what they have. The people living here have
lots of education and an upgrade on the transportation (public transport), as well as more upgraded public parks.
Larren City has the Leaning Tower of Pisa located near the neighborhood beach. This attracts tourists because it is similar to having reasonably easy access to tourism locations within one area. The city has a variety of water fountains, many sporting stadiums and mini parks, which is beneficial for the environment and the citizens. There are multiplicities of statues near local parks, making the town income heavily increase due to the tourists (visiting). This may cause impacts on the roads, causing lots of traffic and noise complaints, and the solution to this is to upgrade the roads and ensure that the resident plots are a decent distance from the noises. It is indeed beneficial for the environment and the income of Larren City (instead of raising taxes and making the citizens unhappy, etc). Larren City has a great water, energy and waste management system which rarely causes many complaints because they have what they urgently need.
In Larren City, they have an expanded trading system within the plot between one industrial area to the others. The reason why their trading system is connected is because some industrial areas are more sophisticated and advanced than the others. There was a significantly large upgrade with the education systems and the environment, now including a wider range of transportation such as express roads, trains and convenient bus stops. An extreme demand of easier access to public transport occurred, so providing bus stops near important places, public services (schools, parks, etc) and main roads has been included to satisfy the citizens of Larren City. People travel to Larren City to live an ethical lifestyle which benefits their satisfactions, needs, wants and demands. Landfill and energy systems have been introduced due to the large increase of citizens, making it less of a hustle caused from complaints and pollution. Population in Larren City continues to expand, meaning that there must be constant updates and upgrades within services and the area.
Overtime, as the city started to increase in size and popularity, there were a few problems. Energy plants had to be reinstalled in new locations of the plot and country roads had to be upgraded to express roads. New Elementary schools and parks were introduced to build up the overall happiness in the town. On express roads, tollbooths were included to increase the income very slightly. It does not have a negative impact on the citizens, but raising the taxes made citizens migrate and outrageous. The most easiest way to increase the income was to build advanced industrial systems and add tollbooths to the places where there were most traffic. The only downfall with the industry increase was that it had lifted the pollution, making some citizens unhappy but it was simply fixed by locating them further away to avoid any complaints. There is currently a low amount of advanced/big schools and mosques due to the lack of space. Although, it does not have a heavy effect on the happiness. Increasing their happiness by providing them with what soothed their demands and wants helped with the raise of population, proving that the Larren City is a very ethical town (for people who have high expectations of a good environmental city to live in - suitable and convenient for citizens).
